Duties and responsibilities:

  • Design undergraduate and postgraduate courses and modules in English Literary and Cultural Studies across a range of periods, genres and theoretical approaches.
  • Administer and examine various courses in English Literary and Cultural Studies.
  • Teach across a range of modules/units using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods and technology.
  • Establish own area of independent research in English Literary and Cultural Studies as appropriate to the work of the Department, ensure a commitment to the highest standards of ethics and integrity in research.
  • Participate in the Departmental and Faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the Department.
  • Contribute to community engagement projects of the Department.
  • Publish peer review research outputs in accordance with the requirements of the University of the Free State for the specific position.
  • Handle general departmental administration on joint course design and delivery
  • Inherent requirements:

    Lecturer:

  • Master’s degree in English Literary and Cultural Studies.
  • Knowledge and skills to teach and facilitate learning in English Literary and Cultural Studies.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
  • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or have been submitted for publication, ideally in accredited journals.
  • A good academic record.
  •  

    Senior Lecturer:

  • A PhD or DLitt degree in English Literature.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in teaching English Literature and/or Cultural Studies at university level.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
  • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or have been submitted for publication, ideally in accredited journals.
  • Proven experience in postgraduate supervision at MA and PhD levels.
  • Evidence of successful grant applications with competitive funding bodies such as the National Research Foundation (NRF).
  •  

    Required competencies:

  • Willingness to enrol for a doctoral degree in English Literary and Cultural Studies at the first available opportunity, if not yet attained by the time of the appointment.

  • Supervision skills
  •  

    Recommendation:

  • Knowledge of any area and period of World Literatures in English, including Postcolonial, North American and British.
  • Familiarity with the academic culture and challenges of students from historically disadvantaged communities.
  • Familiarity with blended learning modes such as “Blackboard”.
  •
