Research Fellow Southampton Wireless Group

Location: Highfield Campus

Fixed Term until 30.11.2020

The Southampton Wireless (SW) Research Group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton is looking to recruit one full-time Research Fellow (RF) for a fixed term contact from 1st December 2017 until 30th November 2020 to work on a new EPSRC grant—‘New Air Interface Techniques for Future Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC)’.

The project is a collaboration between the SW at the University of Southampton and the 5GIC at the University of Surrey. The project aims to meet the challenges of future mMTC by investigating and designing novel non-orthogonal multiple access, flexible duplexing, and adaptive coherent-noncoherent transmission schemes, as well as new waveforms that are tailored for the future mMTC systems. It aims for alleviating the strict synchronism demanded by the legacy wireless systems, and for significantly improving their capabilities, network performance as well as the lifetime of autonomous mMTC nodes. Specifically, the SW team will be responsible for developing high-efficiency noncoherent, partially-coherent and adaptive coherent-noncoherent modulation/demodulation techniques for mMTC applications by jointly exploiting the degrees of freedom available in the time, frequency and spatial domains. They will explore and design new medium access schemes for mMTC nodes to share radio resources, as well as investigate the radio resource sharing algorithms that are beneficial for mMTC applications. Furthermore, they will design new air interfaces for mMTC systems by integrating the algorithms/schemes developed by both the SW and the 5GIC teams, as well as study the performance of these systems by considering practical mMTC environements.

Candidates must have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in the area of wireless communications and preferably post-doc experience. They are required to have a good background in digital communications, information theory as well as the signal processing and optimization theory related to wireless transceiver/network design. Good computer skills in MATLAB/C++ are required for carrying out system/network simulations and for system/network performance study.  Furthermore, a good research publication record is highly desirable.

For an informal discussion, please contact Professor Lie-Liang Yang (email: lly@ecs.soton.ac.uk, +44 (0)2380 593364).

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Suzanne Stone (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 4043. Please quote reference 904217FP on all correspondence.
