Position overview:

As a postdoctoral fellow in Biologics Process Development & Clinical Manufacturing department you will work with a highly collaborative team of Merck scientists, Postdoctoral researchers and external collaborators to utilize a combination of fundamental science (Systems Biology) and engineering/advanced mathematical modeling via multivariate Data Analysis (MVDA) to increase productivity, improve process robustness and product quality and reduce production costs of therapeutic proteins derived from mammalian cell culture processes. Development, execution and analysis of hypothesis driven cell culture experiments will be a key component of the research position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Design, test and implement transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other ‘omics approaches in cell culture process development

- Collaborate internally and externally to develop and implement new approaches to monitor identified potential key biomarkers at real-time to support on-line process control, medium and process optimization

- Assess and monitor activity of cellular secretory pathway via intracellular trafficking and extracellular protein analyses

- Publications on ‘omics analyses and models based on MVDA approaches

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

- PhD in the field of Systems Biology or related discipline with 3 years or less of postdoctoral experience.
Required Experience and Skills:

- Hands-on experience in sample preparation and data analysis for one or more areas of Systems Biology, including transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other ‘omics workflow.

- Ability to apply statistical designs and analyses to understand and improve mammalian cell culture processes

- Excellent scientific understanding of biology and engineering principles for mammalian cell culture, including cell biology and metabolism, medium optimization, process development

- Strong skills in critical thinking, laboratory experimentation and data analysis.

- Track record of scientific contributions (including peer-reviewed manuscripts), and strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Experience and Skills:

- Hands-on experience with applying and integrating Systems Biology tools and computational analyses to understand cell biology and metabolism.

- Experience with interpreting data generated from HPLC, NMR, mass spectroscopy, genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, peptidomics or proteomics analyses

- Knowledge of metabolic pathways, intracellular trafficking and secretory pathways for eukaryotic and prokaryotic systems
