The successful candidate will 1) provide technical support to the sites and the Global Safety and the Environment staff in areas of toxicology, hazard and risk assessment, and regulatory compliance; 2) assist in the implementation of a broad-based occupational and environmental toxicology program for the Company, 3) coordinate the acquisition of toxicity data from both internal and external sources, 4) provide technical assistance in the development and execution of the Company’s hazard communication, new chemical notification, occupational exposure limit, and process review programs, and 5) evaluate hazard data and conduct risk assessments to assist in the development of proper levels of protection for employees, the community, and the environment.

- Provides scientific and technical support for Company-wide programs for hazard communication including OSHA Hazard Communication, the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and EU regulations on classification, labeling and packaging (CLP). Performs hazard evaluations and classifications in support of Safety Data Sheets and labels. Establishes and maintains tracking systems to ensure that health hazard evaluations are completed and properly documented. Gives training programs to employee groups as part of the dissemination of hazard information.

- Performs hazard evaluations of chemicals that might pose a risk to employees, the community or the environment. Documents data and rationale used to classify and categorize compounds (e.g., assign occupational exposure bands (OEBs)). Assists in the development of clear written evaluations of potential hazards so that proper facilities can be designed and constructed, procedures written, and precautionary steps taken. Supports technical aspects of setting occupational exposure limits (OELs) for Merck research compounds, active pharmaceutical ingredients and isolated intermediates to ensure protection of employees and the environment.

- Coordinates the acquisition of toxicity data in order to conduct hazard evaluations. Collaborates with process development groups to conduct process reviews and to ensure that all isolated intermediates are submitted for testing. Monitors testing performed by contract research organizations (CROs) and ensures that results and resulting classifications are properly reflected in Safety Data Sheets and labels.

- Provides technical support to Health Services on maternity occupational health hazard assessments and maintains a database of reproductive hazard classifications.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

- M.S. or M.P.H. in biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or similar technical discipline is required (Ph.D. in Toxicology or related field preferred)

Preferred Experience and Skills:

Three years of experience in occupational and environmental toxicology in an industrial, consulting or regulatory environment.

- Working knowledge of US Hazard Communication Standard, the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for classification and labeling of chemicals and the EU Classification, Labeling and packaging (CLP) regulation.

- Experience in performing hazard classifications and preparing safety data sheets and labels.

- Establishment of occupational exposure limits and bands.

- Familiarity with global new chemical notification requirements.

- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem solving and customer-focus skills.

- Ability to maintain and build relationships across multifunctional teams.

- Strong written, verbal and presentation skills with an ability to present hazard information in a clear and concise manner to varied audiences.

- Strong facilitation skills in working with teams to build understanding, commitment and alignment.

- Ability to manage complexity and ambiguity and work as a collaborative change agent.
