The Project Manager will be a key member of the Global Medical Affairs Operations’ (GMAO) Strategy Realization Office (SRO), supporting major global initiatives to enhance our practices related to Medical Affairs. The GMA initiatives are driven within a strategic program established to enhance key capabilities identified as essential in building a better and stronger Medical Affairs at Merck. This position oversees one or more of these critical initiatives and supports the SRO Lead and various teams addressing business needs in the areas of process improvement, enabling technology solutions, organizational design, compliance, change management, and others.

The role serves as a conduit for communication between Subject Matter Experts, stakeholders, Learning & Development, and the IT support teams.

Key responsibilities include: supporting the SRO Lead in ensuring that the overall Program timelines and objectives are met, facilitating the creation and approval of all project deliverables, creation and maintenance of up-to-date detailed Project Plans, Risk Plans, Issue Logs and other control artifacts as defined by the SRO, communicating with all stakeholders of the project, and assuring the quality of the project deliverables.

The purpose of this position will be to support the program by

- Participating in SRO leadership activities including strategic roadmap development, implementation planning, and change leadership activities
- Leading specific projects within the SRO including, but not limited to:

- Project Planning, Facilitating deliverables, ensuring timely communication and control of all assigned projects
- Preparation of periodic status reports as needed by the SRO,
- Educating teams on specific business methodologies / tools that are laid down by the SRO
- Management of project finances
- Support of project communication needs
- Continuous improvement of the entire program
- Working with and within cross-functional teams to ensure that all areas and supporting functions (e.g., IT, HR, and Finance) are well represented and are in alignment with project goals and the program vision
- Supporting team leaders as both a strategic thinker and as a tactical planner for process and technology solutions, timeline creation, resource assessment, risk management, Estimation, budget development, etc.
- Communicating and escalating issues, challenges, and risks to executive management, team leaders, and SRO leadership as required in a timely manner. Focus on benefits of the project and ensure they are tracked and realized.

Focus areas for teams include, but are not limited to key capabilities identified for Medical Affairs, compliance, quality assurance, enabling technical systems, dashboard, and various supporting functional areas including training, information systems, finance, and human resources.

Qualifications

Education:

- Bachelor’s degree; Technical disciplines preferred

Required:

- 8- 10 years of overall work experience
- Must have strong project management skills including communication (both oral and written), facilitation, negotiation / conflict resolution, and resource management skills;
- Must have self-starting, follow-up ability
- Must have excellent people skills, leadership qualities, and ability to build strong relationships with teams / executives
- Must have the experience of having worked in a matrixed organization with the ability to lead and influence teams and stakeholders
- Must have strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Must have a strong background in facilitating and managing requirements for global projects
- Strong MS Project, Excel, Word, Visio, and PowerPoint skills
- Experience with change management is a plus
- Some travel to international and domestic sites required
- Must have managed at least one project that had multi-location teams

Preferred:

- Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry is desirable
- Project management certification is a plus
- International experience in a global company is a plus
