The Department of Pharmacology at Merck Research Laboratories is seeking an experienced and versatile Senior Scientist with a strong background in biochemical and cellular assay development to join a group of researchers dedicated to the discovery of novel drug candidates. The primary responsibilities of the group are to design, develop, and execute in vitro assays to support a wide variety of infectious disease, neuroscience and cardio-metabolic programs. This position requires strong experimental skills with background in biochemistry and cell biology and experience in quantitative assay development. The successful candidate must be highly flexible and team-oriented. The selected individual will have the opportunity to work with a wide array of scientists from different departments and functional areas, using latest technologies as well as novel approaches. Candidate is expected to be able to analyze, interpret and present data at group and departmental meetings, as well as write internal and external documents on technical and scientific findings.

Qualifications

Education:

- BS with at least 8 years, MS with at least 5 years or PhD with 3 postdoctoral years of relevant experience in assay development.

Required:

- Highly skilled in the design and development of robust biochemical and cellular assays, using a wide range of detection methods (e.g. spectrophotometric, radiometric, colorimetric, fluorescence, etc.)
- Good track record in the successful development and implementation of biochemical and cellular assays for compound screening, complex data analysis, and integrating such data into mechanistic differentiation/optimization of small molecule and biologic lead candidates
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to advance drug discovery projects in a highly cross-functional environment
- Maintain accurate and up to date documentation of all laboratory activities (notebooks, databases).
- Skill in troubleshooting experimental design, assay development and data analysis.
- Independently operate and oversee maintenance of selected lab equipment.

Preferred:

- Expertise in mechanistic enzymology and enzyme kinetics
- Experience with modern biophysical techniques and instruments (e.g. SPR, ITC etc.) to measure binding affinity and kinetic parameters
- Broad industrial drug discovery experience is strongly preferred
