The School of Clinical Medicine

The School of Clinical Medicine has a strong focus on the delivery of both phases of the Medicine program across a number of sites within the Brisbane metropolitan area, including but not limited to, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Herston; the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Woolloongabba; the Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside, and the St Lucia Campus. Leadership at each site is provided by an experienced academic with responsibility for budget and financial matters, human resource matters and facility management. The School consists of academic staff members across all clinical disciplines and more than 2500 academic title holders. 

 

The Gallipoli Medical Research Institute

This PhD will be jointly hosted by the Gallipoli Medical Research Institute.  The GMRI is based with the UQ Greenslopes Clinical School at Greenslopes Private Hospital, the largest private hospital in Australia.  The on-site research groups work alongside clinicians and stakeholders, creating a dynamic research culture within a private healthcare setting which honours the sacrifices of Australia’s veteran community.

The Liver Cancer Research Unit is dedicated to the study of the pathogenesis of liver cancer which is the 3rd leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. We seek to improve the lives of patients with liver cancer through the development of novel treatments for cancer.  The current position will join a team of researchers and students associated with the GMRI.

The Project

Multiple potential projects are available for students including but not limited to:

  • novel gene therapy approaches to treat liver cancer
  • immunotherapy approaches to treat liver cancer
  • liver cancer derived cancer stem cells
  •  

    The Role

    A PhD opportunity is available for students with an Honours/Masters degree in a science related field to join the liver cancer research unit at the Gallipoli Medical Research Institute.

     

    The Person

    Both Australian and International applicants are welcome to apply. Applicants must comply with the relevant entry requirements for PhD admission at The University of Queensland, including English language proficiency, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Demonstration of research ability through publication output in peer-reviewed international journals is also desirable. 

    Specific selection criteria:

  • Candidates should have an Honours degree (1 or 2A, or equivalent) in cell biology, molecular biology, bioscience, genetics, immunology or a related discipline
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and must be self-reliant and motivated
  • Initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and an ability to think laterally
  • Demonstrated organisational ability and good record-keeping skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Experience in models of liver disease or liver cancer, molecular cloning and cell culture techniques is desirable
  • Strong academic performance, the commitment to conduct high quality research, and published output are highly desirable

    Remuneration

    The stipend is equivalent to the APA rate, $26,682 per annum (2017 rate, indexed annually) with the possibility of top-ups for suitable candidates.  The scholarship will be for three (3) years with the possibility of a six (6)-month extension and is subject to the UQ Research Scholarship General Conditions. University fees apply to overseas candidates.
