Research Fellow - Bioinformatics
The Centre for Computational Biology and the Institute of Translational Medicine are seeking to recruit an experienced, energetic and creative researcher in the areas of data mining, machine learning and ontology engineering. The post-holder will be part of a large and diverse H2020 consortium (OpenRiskNet) and will be responsible for the application of ontologies for the development of a semantic framework that will cater the harmonisation, interoperability, integration, analysis of biomedical data as well as the development of a variety of AI methods that cater their analysis. An excellent network of biomedical, clinical and technological collaborations offers novel data types and datasets, as well as opportunities for discovery validation and translation into clinic or pharma by domain experts.
The candidate must have expertise in the intersection of computer science, machine learning and systems engineering. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD relevant to these areas and will complement the current activities of the group with high-class research in the areas of data management, data mining, statistical inference, machine learning, data visualization and algorithms. Experience in semantic technologies and in particular using ontologies or formal knowledge in biology or biomedicine is desirable although not essential. The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of python and java with and the libraries related to data analytics, experience in database management and design, as well as ideally experience in using tools and platforms from ecosystems such as Hadoop. The position requires the ability to independently take responsibility over a scientific project, strong teamwork and communication skills, reliability, attention to detail and effective time management.
The duration for the post will be initially for two years, with the potential for additional year, and it offers a considerable scope for innovation and academic development.
- PhD or equivalent experience in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Sciences. You'll need a relevant degree, at a minimum of a 2:1 classification or equivalent. Degree should have links with bioinformatics and science e.g. biological, biomedical, natural sciences, mathematics and computer science.
- Ability to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of both science and informatics in a clinical setting.
- Innovate and develop ideas into grant proposals
- Learn and keep abreast of latest technological, methodological and software developments.
- Write concise and timely scientific papers and reports
- Plan and prioritise work effectively to meet deadlines
- Proven experience with data mining and analysis, semantic web, and application of machine learning
- Research experience demonstrated through successful publications
- Good Presentation skills and talent for technology and knowledge transfer
- Staff and/or project management experience a plus
- Aptitude for international collaboration a plus
- Ability to interact with industry partners and explain complex ideas to non-scientists in an understandable way
- Ability to work in a heterogeneous environment of Clinicians, Biologist, Bioinformaticians, Computer Scientists
- Proficiency in: High level (e.g. python) and low level (C, C++) programming languages, database development, maintaining code repositories (version control, github)
- Linux expertise including file systems, shell, hardware/software monitoring etc.
