Job Details

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol seeks two, enthusiastic, Teaching Technicians (TTs) to support the Faculty’s Student Bay and soon to be opened Hackspace.

The two roles will support Faculty of Engineering students undertaking practical project work; train students in the use of equipment; and operationally manage both spaces to enable their effective use by students.

Located in Merchant Venturers’ Building the Hackspace contains soldering facilities; two large 3D printers; a CNC router; laser cutter and work areas for students. The TT will run and maintain the Hackspace whilst providing support and advice to students using the facilities there. Alongside experience of running and facilitating a similar environment, experience of hardware and software interfacing (e.g. using micro controllers such as Arduinos or Raspberry Pis) and of training and teaching students, with little practical experience, would be an advantage.

Located in Queen’s Building the Student bay contains soldering facilities; student lathes, student mill; several 3D printers; laser cutter and work areas for students. The Student Bay is adjacent to the Faculty Workshops. The TT will run and maintain the Student Bay whilst providing support and advice to students using the facilities there. Experience of machining (machinist, tool making or similar) and related teaching thereof would be an advantage.

The TTs will support students undertaking activities in either the Hackspace or Student Bay. This is a demanding and varied role. Day to day it may include: advising students on the suitability of their designs, training on equipment and tools; providing effective teaching and demonstration, working with academics and Professional Team members on improving the student experience…and many other things!

These two posts are being offered on full time, open-ended contracts. For the right candidates, job sharing and flexible working hours outside of term time may be possible.

For informal discussion about the posts, you are welcome to contact:

Greg Kemble, Faculty Technical Services Manager: greg.kemble@bristol.ac.uk

It is anticipated that interviews will take place shortly after the closing date.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
