Job Details

A PhD student research position is available in the group of Prof. Dr. Alexandar Tzankov at the Institute of Medical Genetics and Pathology of the University Hospital Basel, starting in late 2017. In this project, we want to elucidate the molecular pathology of follicular lymphomas collected and treated in the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research trial 35/10 (analogous to a former clinical trial with DLBCL1,2)

The project combines molecular genetic characterization of over 100 cases, applying massive parallel sequencing utilizing a self-developed and routinely used customized "lymphoma next generation sequencing panel" that builds on our previous expertise3. Further phenotypization4 and fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses of the cases5 is also envisioned.

The project is ideally suited for a motivated PhD student, who is interested in biomedical research applying cutting-edge technology in oncological diagnostics. To ensure tight scientific continuity, it is supposed that she/he shall be introduced for at least 3 months to the applied technologies by the former PhD student of the group leader, now postdoctoral scientist at the Institute, Dr. Darius Juskevicius.

The Institute of Medical Genetics and Pathology of the University Hospital Basel offers an exciting and enthusiastic work environment with excellent infrastructure, and a strong national and international collaboration network. Our facilities include fully equipped modern next generation sequencing infrastructure, fully equipped research labs, high-end fluorescent microscopes and excellent desk working spaces.

Salary and benefits are attractive, following the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation. The research position is funded for 3 years with a starting date in late 2017, on mutual agreement.

We are looking for an English (and preferably German) speaking colleague who is highly motivated and capable of contributing to a team environment and continuing the scientific excellence of the lab. Interested applicants require a master's degree in Molecular Biology, Medicine, or related fields.

Prior experience in genetics and genomics is advantageous. Skills in written English are essential.

Applications should include a CV and contact information for at least two references.

Applications should be sent by email to:

Prof. Dr. Alexandar Tzankov.
