Job Purpose
The University of Birmingham is seeking to hire a research associate to support the work of Dr Karen McAuliffe as part of a European Research Council (ERC) funded project on ‘Law and Language at the European Court of Justice’ (LLECJ) by carrying out a systematic literature review on the role of the Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The LLECJ project examines the production of the multilingual jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) and investigates how that Court functions as a multicultural, multilingual organisation.

Summary of Role
- Carry out a systematic literature review on the role of the Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union
- Work within the specified European Research Council (ERC) research grant (LLECJ project)
- Operate within area of specialism (law/EU law/EU institutions)
Main Duties/Responsibilities
- Collect research data
- Analyse research data as directed
- Write a systematic literature review
- Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
- Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
Person Specification
Essential:
- Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area
- Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques, in particular knowledge of research methods and techniques for systematic literature reviews
- Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively, including ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature
- Ability to access and organise resources successfully
- Work to agreed specifications, time and quality standards
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
- Ability to work remotely from the research team
- Ability to use creativity to analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes
Desirable:
- Higher degree in relevant area
- Knowledge of French and/or German
- Experience/knowledge of the workings of EU institutions
