The incumbent reports to the Director of the CSLS.

The primary goals of the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), which reports to the Vice-Rector (Learning and Teaching), is to provide systemic-holistic support and development to students, to promote coherent cooperation among all the University's role players (especially students and faculties) to advance the goals of SU and students.

The Centre for Student Leadership and Structures (CSLS) operates in conjunction with the Centre for Student Communities (CSC) and the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD). All three of these Centres form part of the Division for Student Affairs (DSA), which is primarily aimed at student development by means of a broad spectrum of co-curricular activities, including leadership development and the integration of students' university experience at various levels. The mission of CSLS entails the integration of students' university experiences, with a focus on transformation in its broadest terms, providing engaged leadership development to the SRC and to be a direct link to the Rector's Management Team (RMT).

 

Aim of position:          

Consolidating and growing the impact of the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Leadership Institute (FVZSLI) within Stellenbosch University and its external and global communities. Providing strategic management of the Institute so that it gives expression to the vision of the Centre for Student Leadership and Structures within Student Affairs. Providing direct support to the Director: Centre for Student Leadership and Structures.

 

Duties:

Providing Strategic Leadership for the FVZSLI:

  • Planning and delivering strategies aligned with the Centre for Student Leadership and Structures and Student Affairs, within the vision of Stellenbosch University.

 

Delivering on the Sustainability Plan to ensure the viability of the FVZSLI:

  • Building, growing and maintaining internal networks and relationships;

  • Building, growing and maintain external networks and relationships (including, but not limited to government, corporate, civil society, universities both nationally and internationally);

  • Building third stream income opportunities;

  • Securing donor funding and programme sponsorships, in partnership with the SU Development Office;

  • Ensuring financial contribution of Short Course offerings;

  • Practicing sound financial management within budget and SU protocol.

 

Management of Leadership Development Portfolio:

  • Responsible, with the programme manager and programme coordinators, for delivery of the portfolio of leadership development offerings;

  • Developing and aligning leadership development offerings to achieve strategic objectives;

  • Ensuring registration, accreditation and quality assurance of offerings;

  • Ensuring co-curricular alignment of leadership development offerings.

 

General Management:

  • Assuming primary responsibility for the day to day management of the FVZSLI;

  • Managing FVZSLI staff and interns.

 

Provides support to the Centre for Student Leadership and Structures as Deputy Director:

  • Participating in strategy development and implementation for the Centre;

  • FVZSLI and CSLS reporting and proposal writing;

  • Participating in committees and task teams as required;

  • Providing assistance to the Director for Student Leadership and Structures as required.

 

Job Requirements:

  • A master's degree;

  • A minimum of five years' management experience within a matrix organisation;

  • Ability to align understanding of student support and development with programme and initiative development;

  • Leadership development and delivery experience;

  • Proven experience in building successful collaborative relationships;

  • Strong experience in team leadership and development;

  • Proven ability to secure funding.

  • Strategic networking, thinking and organisational alignment;

  • Effective financial management;

  • Persuasive written and verbal communicator;

  • Analytical and forward thinking;

  • Written and verbal communication skills;

  • Thoroughness and results oriented;

  • Decisiveness and problem solving.

 

Please note that some of the activities will take place outside normal working hours.
