The Department of General Linguistics at Stellenbosch University is committed to excellent undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and academic supervision, quality research, and effective community interaction involving the application of theoretical insights to linguistic phenomena in the South African, as well as the international context. The Department's teaching and research activities focus on both formal and applied linguistics, including language structure (syntax and morphology), first and second language acquisition, and several aspects of language use (visit www.sun.ac.za/linguist). Our research focuses on multilingual and intercultural contexts, taking as point of departure the Department's location in the Western Cape and on the African continent. We work collaboratively on a number of research projects with local and overseas departments, as well as with institutions in Africa, the latter via our involvement in the Faculty's Graduate School.
Duties:- Developing and presenting undergraduate and postgraduate modules in psycholinguistics and cognate fields, as well as in formal linguistics;
- Postgraduate supervision in psycholinguistics and cognate fields, as well as in formal linguistics;
- Planning, executing, facilitating, and coordinating research of the Multilingualism and Cognition Laboratory;
- Active participation in the research, publication and teaching activities of the Department;
- Administrative tasks associated with these activities.
Job Requirements:
- PhD (completed or in progress) in Linguistics;
- Skill and experience in training and teaching in psycholinguistics at a Higher Educational level;
- Thorough understanding of current theoretical perspectives in psycholinguistics;
- Thorough understanding of experimental psycholinguistic paradigms;
- A strong theoretical background in at least three of the following: second language acquisition; language processing; syntax and morphology; formal semantics;
- Training in at least two of the following: eye tracking; EEG; electrodermal methods; Python programming (or similar);
- Knowledge of advanced statistical methods and software (R and similar);
- Commitment to publishing in high-impact academic journals;
- Willingness to teach in a multilingual environment;
- Promoting innovative and critical thinking in psycholinguistics and cognate fields among undergraduate and postgraduate students;
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in developing, facilitating, and coordinating the academic project of the Department, with a focus on the research activities of the Multilingualism and Cognition Laboratory.
Recommendation:
- Publications in accredited scientific journals;
- Experience in postgraduate supervision;
- Experience in working in a psycholinguistics laboratory;
- International research experience (e.g., through overseas stints and conferences);
- Expertise in the psycholinguistics of Southern African multilingualism;
- Knowledge of a Southern African language other than English or Afrikaans.
