Die Departement Algemene Taalwetenskap aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch is verbind tot uitnemende voor- en nagraadse onderrig en studieleiding, kwaliteit navorsing, en effektiewe gemeenskapsinteraksie wat die toepassing van teoretiese insigte op taalwetenskaplike verskynsels in beide die Suid-Afrikaanse en internasionale konteks behels. Die Departement se onderrig- en navorsingsaktiwiteite fokus op sowel formele as toegepaste taalwetenskap, insluitend taalstruktuur (sintaksis en morfologie), eerste- en tweedetaalverwerwing en verskeie aspekte van taalgebruik (sien www.sun.ac.za/linguist). Ons navorsing fokus op veeltalige en interkulturele kontekste met die Departement se plasing in die Wes-Kaap en in Afrika as uitgangspunt. Verskeie van ons navorsingsprojekte behels samewerking met plaaslike en oorsese departemente, sowel as instansies in Afrika, laasgenoemde deur ons betrokkenheid by die Fakulteit se Nagraadse Skool.

Department of General Linguistics

Part-time 5/8 Junior Lecturer

The Department of General Linguistics at Stellenbosch University is committed to excellent undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and academic supervision, quality research, and effective community interaction involving the application of theoretical insights to linguistic phenomena in the South African as well as the international context. The Department's teaching and research activities focus on both formal and applied linguistics, including language structure (syntax and morphology), first and second language acquisition, and several aspects of language use (visit  www.sun.ac.za/linguist). Our research focuses on multilingual and intercultural contexts, taking as point of departure the Department's location in the Western Cape and on the African continent. We work collaboratively on a number of research projects with local and overseas departments, as well as with institutions in Africa, the latter via our involvement in the Faculty's Graduate School.

  • Ontwikkeling en aanbieding van voorgraadse en nagraadse modules in sosiolinguistiek en verwante velde;

  • Aktiewe deelname aan die Departement se navorsings-, publikasie- en onderrigaktiwiteite;
  • Administratiewe take verbonde aan hierdie aktiwiteite.

  • Developing and presenting undergraduate and postgraduate modules in sociolinguistics and cognate fields;
  • Postgraduate supervision in sociolinguistics and cognate fields;
  • Actively participating in the research, publication and teaching activities of the Department;
  • Administrative tasks associated with these activities.

  • 'n Honneursgraad in Taalwetenskap met inskrywing vir 'n MA-graad in Taalwetenskap in 2018, óf  `n MA-graad in Taalwetenskap (voltooi of reeds in aanvang);
  • 'n Goeie teoretiese agtergrond in ten minste twee van die volgende: veeltaligheid; taal en onderrig; of interkulturele kommunikasie;
  • Grondige begrip van resente teoretiese perspektiewe in sosiolinguistiek;
  • Ervaring in die gebruik van kwalitatiewe sosiolinguistiese navorsingsmetodes soos taaletnografie, taalbiografie, en kunsgebaseerde metodologie;
  • Verbintenis tot die lewering van artikels vir hoë-impak vaktydskrifte;
  • Vaardigheid in `n Suid-Afrikaanse taal buiten Afrikaans of Engels;
  • Bereidwilligheid om in 'n veeltalige omgewing onderrig te gee;
  • Bevordering van vernuwende en kritiese denke in sosiolinguistiek en verwante velde onder voorgraadse en nagraadse studente;
  • Vermoë om onafhanklike sowel as in spanverband die ontwikkeling, fasilitering en koördinering van die akademiese projek van die Departement te bevorder.

  • An Honours degree in Linguistics with registration for an MA degree in Linguistics taking place in 2018, OR an MA degree in Linguistics (in progress or completed);
  • A strong theoretical background in at least two of the following: multilingualism; language and education; or intercultural communication;
  • Thorough understanding of current theoretical perspectives in sociolinguistics;
  • Experience in using qualitative sociolinguistic research methods such as linguistic ethnography, language biographies, and arts-based methodology;
  • Commitment to publishing in high-impact academic journals;
  • Proficiency in a South African language other than English or Afrikaans;
  • Willingness to teach in a multilingual environment;
  • Promoting innovative and critical thinking in sociolinguistics and cognate fields among undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in developing, facilitating, and coordinating the academic project of the Department.

  • Vaardigheid en ervaring in opleiding en onderrig in sosiolinguistiek op Hoëronderwys-vlak;
  • Kundigheid in die sosiolinguistiek van Suider-Afrikaanse veeltaligheid;
  • Navorsingsvoordragte by akademiese werkswinkels en/of konferensies.

  • Skill and experience in training and teaching in sociolinguistics at a Higher Educational level;
  • Expertise in the sociolinguistics of Southern African multilingualism;
  • Research presentations at academic workshops and/or conferences.
