CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / SENIOR LECTURER AND ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Director (and current Assistant Director) in the academic and operational management of the Centre for Human Rights, which is a department in the Faculty of Law;
  • Organising and managing academic and research-related programmes;
  • Overseeing reporting under various contracts;
  • Supporting fundraising for the Centre’s externally funded projects and programmes;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Representing the Centre in international fora;
  • Teaching in the Centre’s postgraduate and training programmes;
  • Undertaking and publishing research outputs in line with Faculty policy;
  • Supervising master’s and doctoral candidates.

The successful candidate will be appointed permanently as Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer in the Centre. This is a new position in the Centre. With this appointment, the Centre management will consist of a Director and two Assistant Directors.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A doctoral degree in International Human Rights Law (although a professional or other qualification, supported by research publications, could be considered in appropriate cases);
  • Recognised champion of human rights;
  • A proven record of research and publications in international human rights law and related subject fields;
  • A proven record of teaching and training in the subject field (including in non-academic settings);
  • Proven experience and competence in successfully fundraising and management of these funds;
  • Experience in liaison with internal and external stakeholders, particularly within Africa;
  • Established national, African and international profile and networks;
  • Proven competence and experience in project management; 
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students (requirement for appointment as Professor and Associate Professor).

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students (recommended for appointment as Senior Lecturer);
  • Academic specialisation on African issues;
  • Competence in any of the other AU languages (French, Arabic, Swahili, Portuguese);
  • Experience in:
    • Working with AU human rights bodies;
    • Project monitoring and evaluation;
    • Litigation before national or international tribunals;
    • Editing or production of publications.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
