Job Details

IRB Barcelona is a self-standing, non-profit institution devoted to basic and applied biomedical research. It was set up in 2005 jointly by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona and is located at the Barcelona Science Park. The institute currently has more than 430 members (scientific, technical and administrative staff) from all over the world, who work across disciplines to advance research in the biomedical sciences

IRB Barcelona seeks a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher(experimental/wet-lab) in the Genome Data Science (Dr. F. Supek) and Genomic Instability & Cancer (T. Stracker) laboratories.

The group aims to attract a biologist to work on an ERC-funded project “HYPER-INSIGHT”, which deals with examining mutational patterns in human cancers in order to elucidate types of DNA repair defects. We will explore how such defects correspond to vulnerabilities of cancer cells that may predict new translational opportunities for personalized cancer therapy. We will validate such predictions and explore underlying mechanisms by using cancer cell lines as models.

The Genome Data Science Lab is primarily a computational group who is seeking an experimental biologist to perform CRISPR essentiality screens on human cell lines, with the goal of elucidating defective DNA replication/repair pathways that can be exploited to kill cancer cells. Experiments will be performed in close collaboration with the lab of Travis Stracker at the same institution.

The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance; the initial contract is for 1 year with a possibility of extension. Anticipated starting date is 01-Feb-2018 although it is possible to start before or after that date.

Duties:

  • Perform excellent, high-impact research that aligns with the interests of the hosting lab(s)
  • Plan, design, carry out and interpret conditional essentiality genetic screens on cultured cells, and the necessary follow-up experiments to elucidate mechanisms of action
  • Present in group and institutional meetings, contribute to manuscripts, mentor junior researchers, attend international conferences and collaborate with other groups in IRB and elsewhere.

Applications for the above opening should include a CV (highlighting 1-3 publications and explaining the candidate’s contribution to each), motivation letter and contact information of potential referees and should be sent by e-mail to: irbjobs@irbbarcelona.org Reference: PD/17/08
