Job Details

The School of Mathematics, University of Bristol, is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader in Mathematics. A Lecturer holds an indefinite appointment roughly equivalent to an Assistant or Associate Professor in the US system (depending on career stage); a Senior Lecturer/Reader is equivalent to an Associate Professor.

The appointment is part of a major strategic expansion of the School of Mathematics, which in spring 2018 will move to a substantial Grade-II listed property, providing office space for over 100 academics, 100 post-graduate students and 80 post-docs. The building is currently being transformed into a state-of-the-art mathematics teaching and research facility at a cost of £33M. The University is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, is ranked among the top 50 universities in the world, and 9th in the UK in the latest QS World University Rankings. The Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017 has ranked Bristol’s School of Mathematics amongst the top 40 mathematics departments worldwide.

We are looking for world-class researchers in any areas of pure mathematics, including those currently not represented in the School. The successful candidate will be based at the Institute for Pure Mathematics or the Institute for Probability, Analysis and Dynamics. The post-holder will be responsible for her or his own research programme, carry out appropriate administrative tasks and deliver excellence in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The School of Mathematics has currently further openings for Lectureships/Senior Lectureships/Readerships in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics and Statistical Science. Candidates whose expertise intersects with one of these areas are encouraged to submit multiple applications as appropriate.

Informal enquires are welcome and can be directed to Prof. Jens Marklof FRS (Head of School, maths-recruitment@bristol.ac.uk) as well as the Institute Directors Prof. Tim Browning (Institute for Pure Mathematics t.d.browning@bristol.ac.uk) or Prof. Balint Toth (Institute for Probability, Analysis and Dynamics balint.toth@bristol.ac.uk).

The School of Mathematics is a supporter of the LMS Good Practice Scheme aiming at advancing women's careers in mathematics and we therefore particularly welcome applications from women for this post. http://www.maths.bris.ac.uk/admin/life/women/

Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure their referees send a letter of reference by email to
maths-recruitment@bristol.ac.uk by the deadline of 27 November 2017.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
