Responsibilities
Manager, Legal Affairs, will perform the functions of an in-house legal adviser and assist the Head of Legal Affairs in all matters entrusted to the Legal Office of the University, ensuring that these are addressed in an effective, timely and comprehensive manner.
S/he will work in a complex educational and research led institution of higher learning with multiple internal constituencies and departments, including the network of hospitals which serve as teaching sites. This is a management position where the incumbent is expected to play a proactive role in monitoring legislation and handling legal issues that have implications on AKU’s operations, nationally and internationally.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Preparation of legal opinions
- Drafting agreements and other documents
- Ensuring regulatory compliance
- Handling various areas of law including corporate, taxation, banking, land, construction, employment, intellectual property and litigation
- Interacting with government departments, agencies and regulatory bodies
- Conducting legal research
- Attending management or other meetings as required
- Do such other things as the senior leadership may direct.
Requirements
An ideal candidate must have:
- An LLB with 7-10 years relevant legal experience, preferably in a senior position within a corporate or institutional setting;
- Enrollment as an Advocate of the High Court;
- Superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Capacity for lateral thinking;
- Strategic thinker and planner.
A Master’s degree and enrollment as an Advocate of the Supreme Court as well as Barrister-at-Law would be added advantages.
