The University of Southampton seeks an exceptional candidate for its newly bestowed Regius Professorship of Ocean Sciences to be based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

We seek a highly accomplished individual with an outstanding international track record in any area of ocean sciences defined in its broadest sense.  We welcome interest from candidates in fields including, but not limited to: the physics, chemistry or biology of the oceans; all aspects of climate science; the atmosphere; the cryosphere; maritime engineering, sensor and/or autonomous technology; ecology; biotechnology, energy and resources; food and water security; and environmental economics.

The Regius Professorship of Ocean Sciences is unique.  It was bestowed by Her Majesty The Queen to the University of Southampton in 2016 in recognition of our international leadership in ocean science and the maritime economy to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable high personal scientific standing with an outstanding track record of publishing in leading international journals; evidence of attracting significant research funding; research leadership leading to impact of this work in societal, industrial and/or policy matters; and the ability and readiness to take advantage of the multi-disciplinary research opportunities offered by the University.

Ranked in the top one percent of global universities, Southampton is a leading international university. Ocean and Earth Science is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) on the University’s Waterfront Campus alongside our Natural Environment Research Council, NERC-NOC colleagues. Ocean and Earth Science at Southampton is the UK’s top marine science programme and among the top few programmes in earth and environmental science by every measure (REF 2014). Forged through partnership between the University of Southampton and NERC, and housed in a large purpose-built structure, NOCS is among the largest and most successful marine science institutions in the world.  It brings together, under one roof, over 500 researchers and support staff drawn from physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience and engineering.

Southampton offers a research and teaching environment in Ocean and Earth Science with real critical mass.  The Graduate School of National Oceanography Centre Southampton numbers over 200 PhD students and we graduate over 250 undergraduate and masters students every year. Together with our Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI), the Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics and our Institute for Maritime Law, this makes Southampton world-leading in the marine and maritime sector. SMMI brings together over 1000 University of Southampton researchers and innovators. It offers a cross-disciplinary environment covering ocean and maritime engineering, humanities, natural sciences, physical sciences and social sciences, where knowledge acquisition and application is achieved through collaboration with business, civic and industrial societies.
