Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in energy or engineering economics? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities? Do you want to work on a large multi-institution research project alongside leading academics in the field of energy storage?

Generation Integrated Energy Storage (GIES) – A Paradigm Shift, is a new EPSRC-funded project which will assess a class of systems that blends electricity generation and storage, to understand the role that they could play in future energy systems. Their ability to deliver low-carbon energy on demand, at low system cost, will be investigated from technical, economic, and policy standpoints. You will investigate the economics of GIES systems, which store energy in a convenient form before converting it to electricity on demand. The project is in collaboration with the Universities of Nottingham, Cambridge, and Birmingham.

You will quantify the marginal economic value of GIES systems when these co-exist with conventional energy storage systems using Real Options analysis techniques. You will explore various approaches to most efficient project financing and cash flow management. You will also formulate draft business and contractual models designed to make the investment in GIES feasible and to maximise the likelihood of success of such projects.

Holding a PhD (or close to completion) or equivalent experience in energy project appraisal, energy economics, energy storage, or a closely allied discipline, you will have a strong background in engineering, ideally in disciplines such as mechanical, energy, or industrial engineering. You will have a creative, enthusiastic approach to research and a flair for working in collaboration with external project partners.
