Job Title: Assistant Professor in Coastal and Marine Sciences

Position Description: New College of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of interdisciplinary coastal and marine sciences, broadly interpreted to embrace approaches from multiple natural science disciplines. Specific examples of research areas can be found here: https://www.ncf.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/division-of-natural-sciences/natural-sciences/information-for-nat-sci-faculty-applicants/. The successful candidate’s primary appointment will be in the Division of Natural Sciences with secondary appointments and collaborations as appropriate. This position is one of several college-wide hires designed to support interdisciplinary, collaborative programs in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, and Marine Science. The successful candidate should therefore have a strong interest in contributing to these interdisciplinary programs. Receipt of the PhD (in one of the natural sciences, oceanography, environmental science or a related field) is expected by the time of appointment and the position will begin August 2018. The successful candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching and research, and postdoctoral research and previous teaching experience are strongly preferred. The teaching responsibility is two classes per semester, and experience using and teaching GIS and a willingness to guide students in developing GIS research skills is highly valued. In addition, faculty supervise tutorials, independent study projects, and senior undergraduate theses. The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain a program of research appropriate to a quality liberal arts and sciences college. New College welcomes research programs that complement those of the current faculty. New College is committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty. Women and candidates from underrepresented groups or whose knowledge or skills can support an inclusive culture and learning environment are especially encouraged to apply.

Situated on the Gulf Coast of Florida and Sarasota Bay, an Estuary of National Significance, New College is a nationally recognized, selective public honors college with a 10:1 student/faculty ratio. Students are intellectually independent and highly motivated. Undergraduate research has a central role in the curriculum, and a senior thesis/project is required of all students. Students receive narrative evaluations in lieu of grades. New College is committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and research and encourages collaborative student-faculty scholarship.  Facilities include a new wing of the science building (completed in Aug. 2017) and the Pritzker Marine Biology Research Center, which features circulating conditioned seawater and life support equipment suitable for culturing a wide variety of aquatic organisms. For a description of the Division of Natural Sciences, please see: https://www.ncf.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/division-of-natural-sciences/. A Master’s in Data Science program also offers excellent cyberinfrastructure resources and opportunities for on-campus collaboration. This position is one of 15 new faculty lines for 2018, and part of an exciting multi-year, campus-growth initiative funded by the State of Florida (see https://www.ncf.edu/about/growth-2024/).

A complete application will include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, the names of three references (including at least one who can address teaching), graduate transcripts (unofficial is sufficient for screening purposes), a statement of teaching philosophy (including course proposals), a diversity statement (a separate statement describing past experience in activities that promote diversity and inclusion and/or plans to make future contributions), and a description of proposed research (including how undergraduates would be involved). Review of completed applications will begin Nov. 13 and continue until the position is filled. An online application: https://ncf.simplehire.com/ should be completed. New College of Florida is an EOE institution.
