Job Details

The Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHEP) is a new Centre which provides support for academic and research staff at the University of Southampton. The Centre is located within the Faculty of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences (FSHMS) in Southampton’s Education School alongside the Institute for Professional Practice in Education (IPPE) and the Institute for Educational Effectiveness and Equity (IE3). As part of the University’s ambitious 10-year plan, the Centre aims to provide comprehensive world-leading professional development for those engaged in research and teaching activity at all stages of academic career development across the life course, from PGR students through Early Career Researchers, Lecturers, Associate Professors and Professors.

The Centre has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Programmes (Principal Teaching Fellow1or Associate Professor2) to manage the operation of the Centre and make a significant and sustained contribution to the development of professional development for academics and researchers.  The Director of Programmes will play a key role in supporting the University’s Education Strategy through developing world-class, research-informed provision to be delivered both within and outside the institution.  You will have the opportunity to work across Faculties and Academic Units to embed a University-wide, distributed model of professional development, and to develop external-facing provision through enterprise activities.

The appointment is a permanent post commencing on 29th January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in education or related area, together with a PGCE, QTS, PGCAP, Fellowship or Senior Fellowship of the HEA or equivalent teaching qualification or experience.  You will have a well-established national reputation in academic and researcher development and recent and relevant experience of managing academic and researcher development in the higher education sector.  You will have an established track record in both education and research and will be capable of planning, shaping and delivering teaching and research activities. You will also have excellent negotiation skills and be able to engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders at all levels.  You will be able to manage teams of academic and administrative staff effectively, demonstrating key leadership skills, the ability to resolve difficulties and to develop staff as required to maintain excellence in provision.

We particularly welcome applicants with strong strategic skills.  Experience in delivering higher level apprenticeships would be advantageous.

Interviews will be held in November 2017.  As part of the interview process, you will be invited to give a presentation which demonstrates your vision for academic and researcher development in the context of Southampton’s 10-year plan and provide a short teaching focussed lecture.

1Principal Teaching Fellow: Staff on the education pathway will contribute predominantly through educational activities. You may also make contributions in the areas of Research and/or Enterprise, although these are unlikely to be a major feature of the role, and will often be purely to inform or underpin educational activities.

2Associate Professor: Staff on the balanced pathway must make at least a 20 per cent contribution in the area of Education and at least a 20 per cent contribution in the area of Research; you may also make contributions in the area of Enterprise, although this is unlikely to be a major feature of the role.

All staff are expected to make contributions in the area of Leadership, Management and Engagement. Beyond these underlying principles, the exact make-up of your role will vary depending on your particular activities within the University.

Informal enquiries can be made at any time to: Professor Janice Griffiths, Director of Enterprise, Southampton Education School, J.B.Griffiths@southampton.ac.uk.
