Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of the North American Office has primary strategic responsibility for the university’s fundraising activities in Canada and the United States and will lead a team that will generate philanthropic and other financial income for the priorities of the university. Position is an integral part of University’s commitment to excellent customer service by facilitating communication and relationship-building with donors, volunteers and key stakeholders.

 

The position will be based in Toronto / Western Canada.

 

Responsibilities

You will be responsible to:

  • Strategically lead Resource Development in North American, planning and delivering ambitious donor engagement activities to achieve fundraising targets in support of university priorities.  
  • Participate as a key member of the senior management team of Resource Development, representing North America, and partner in the wider university-wide objectives of Resource Development.
  • Lead, manage and motivate fundraising and advancement staff in North America, setting and achieving agreed team objectives and personal targets. Build capacity, as necessary, of the North American office to achieve results.
  • Manage and advance a personal portfolio of leadership and major gift donors and prospective donors across North America to achieve ambitious annual personal fundraising targets in support of university priorities.
  • Advice, support, and partner with university leadership, academic faculty, senior administrators, colleagues in Resource Development and Alumni Affairs, and others to advance fundraising in North America.
  • Work with volunteers to advance fundraising.
  • Ensure that university and department policies and procedures related to fundraising and advancement services, are observed and implemented, aspiring to best practice.
  • Implement high quality, consistent and sustainable donor communications, donor cultivation activities, donor reporting, and donor stewardship.  
  • Ensure highest level of standards related to cultural sensitivity, ethical behaviour and professionalism. 
  • Travel regularly to meet donors and, as necessary, to visit university campuses and locations. Participate in strategic meetings internationally, in-person or virtually.
  • Responsible for leading development and implementation of the resource mobilization strategy for the team to ensure engagements are well institutionalized and supported.

 

Requirements

  • A university education, preferably at the Masters level.
  • Senior level experience in fundraising in universities would be a distinct advantage.
  • Minimum 10 years’ of seasoned professional experience at leadership level, including 5 to 6 years in a related discipline.
  • A strong track record and experience of cultivating, soliciting, and closing major and principal gifts (7-8 figures) and delivering multi-million dollar targets.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practice in advancement, advancement services and alumni relations.
  • Experience working in complex international environments or institutions.
  • Senior level experience in working directly with and advising university leadership, academic faculty and influential volunteers.
  • Senior level staff management experience including mentoring and motivating staff, and the setting of and delivery of ambitious targets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner.
  • Willingness to travel nationally, in the USA, and internationally.
  • Knowledge of, or proven sensitivity to perse cultures, including preferably, the Islamic and developing world.
  • Strategic thinking, creative and diplomatic skills.
