The Faculty is seeking energetic and productive candidates to strengthen its capacity to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and research related to the contemporary Urban Silk-Road, with a particular focus on urban and economic development in the Belt and Road region. This is part of a coordinated hire across four Faculties (Architecture, Arts, Education and Social Sciences) to extend the University’s Urban China research and teaching capacity, with a specific emphasis on the contemporary Urban Silk-Road.  The Department launched the One Belt One Road Urban Observatory (http://fac.arch.hku.hk/upad/cusup/OBORobs) in May 2016 to drive forward urban research on and in regions associated with the Belt and Road Initiative, with cutting-edge urban science techniques and policy analytics.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in a topic relating to the economics of cities or regions and should have teaching and research experience in one or more of the following fields of specialization: spatial economics, transport economics, and housing economics. Special knowledge of and expertise in Asian regional economic-spatial development in the global context is especially welcome.  They should also have a track record of research, publications in prominent journals, teaching, and obtaining research grants. The Department is particularly keen to appoint an urban economist who can teach and research on: the interface between economic development and infrastructure development, urban planning and property development in the local, regional and global contexts and preferably from the Eurasian perspective; the economic, institutional, cultural and policy environments of infrastructure development, and the impact of infrastructure development of different spatial scale on the economy and the built environment generally, and on land and housing markets and policy specifically.  Apart from teaching at the Department of Urban Planning and Design, the appointee will be expected to teach one course in another HKU Faculty (Arts, Education, or Social Sciences). He/She will join one or more of the 13 research groups comprising the HKUrbanLab (the research arm of the Faculty of Architecture).

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as leave, and medical benefits.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
