Job Details

Executive Dean
Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

The University of Queensland (UQ) is a world class institution which ranks well within the top 100 universities worldwide measured through the majority of independent university rankings.  It leads the nation in the prestigious Nature index and in Australian Research Council grants (2016).

One of Australia’s elite ‘Group of Eight’ research-intensive universities, UQ is also a charter member of edX and a founding member of Universitas 21.  The University has a 50,000 plus student community, more than 7000 academic and professional staff, and a $1.7 billion annual operating budget.

The Executive Dean reports through the Provost to the Vice-Chancellor and is responsible for the leadership and management of one of UQ’s most important and successful faculties.  The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) is a large, comprehensive faculty with more than 300 academic staff, a broad academic profile and substantial research achievements.  These are reflected in the 2017 Leiden rankings, where HASS at UQ ranks 16th in the world.  It includes seven schools, a number of research institutes and centres, and two museums.  The Faculty has around 7,500 undergraduates and approximately 2,000 postgraduate students.

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a highly regarded faculty and continue to build on recent successes.  It requires a leader with a focus on research excellence who will also support innovation in teaching and learning and developing a first class student experience.  Also key will be a strong external orientation and the capacity to maintain and build upon the Faculty’s strong reputation through engagement with a large and diverse group of external stakeholders.

The University is seeking to appoint an inspiring and strategic leader with a strong academic background and the ability to unify diverse discipline groups around a coherent vision and strategy. The position calls for a team player and accomplished communicator, capable of embracing change and innovation. The successful candidate will need a global perspective with the ability to drive opportunities with local and offshore partners.
