Please note that the incumbent will be in the employ of Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) but will be based at the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein campus.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform various managerial duties related to the Lexicography Unit (e.g. budget allocation and compilation of business plans, action plans and strategic plans for the Unit).
  • Liaise with Board of Directors and staff.
  • Undertake language preservation and documentation initiatives.
  • Collaborate and liaise with stakeholders and the Unit.
  • Assist with training and capacity building.
  • Liaise and cooperate with other national Lexicography Units, the National Terminology Office, PanSALB and its structures as well as language facilitation services such as libraries.
  • Perform duties relating to the final editing of manuscripts by providing expert guidance during the editorial process.
  • Provide duties relating to the final supervision of the manuscripts.
  • Ensure quality control, authenticity and relevancy of content relating to the topic and language.
  • Manage the overall functioning of the Unit.

    Inherent requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Sesotho or in General Linguistics or Communications Studies.
  • Ten (10) year’s relevant experience in managerial control of multiple functions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the editorial system of dictionaries.
  •  

    Required competencies:

  • Experience in Lexicography and Terminography.
  • Experience in lexicographical principles and practice.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of special lexicographical database programmes.
  • Strong interpersonal and liaison skills.
  • Managerial skills.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including in the Sesotho language.
  • Knowledge of Sesotho Linguistics.
  • Personnel Management skills.
  • Project Management skills.
  •  

    Recommendations:

  • Sesotho as native language.
  •  

    Term of office: 

    Five years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term.

     

    Assumption of duties:

    As soon as possible.
