Established in 1980, Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM) has the honour of being the founding academic entity of the University and a benchmark for nursing education in Pakistan.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Dean, SONAM, you will liaise with the Dean and Assistant Deans to ensure excellence in delivery of Academic Programmes, and pursue the development of international relations at a senior nursing level, regionally, nationally and internationally.  You will work  closely with the faculty, students, and Alumni  to ensure student input and participation in programmes  and  promote  their physical and mental wellbeing.

 

You will be also responsible for:

  • agreeing on a portfolio of projects (as required), in close consultation with Dean, that supports the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan, measuring its quality and outcomes and/or fine-tune its direction
  • reviewing, implementing and monitoring the SoNaM’s Strategic Plan for continual improvement in teaching and learning, research and clinical services
  • working with various entities/departments at AKU/AKUH to enhance student and faculty experiences
  • overseeing and ensuring the quality of the appraisal process for faculty and administrative staff
  • coordinating with Assistant Deans in matters related to teaching and learning activities and student experiences
  • undertaking required key projects and overseeing its successful delivery on time and within budget
  • undertaking feasibility studies, appraisals and project evaluations, as required
  • working with the Deans and SoNaM outreach and policy unit/committee on the development and implementation of International Strategies and address related issues including engagement with overseas alumni and other partners
  • setting, monitoring and reviewing appropriate Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for national and international activity within the School’s Strategic Plan and align them with the wider university KPIs in academic, research & innovation and enterprise & engagement
  • ensuring that teaching activities are implemented in a way which is consistent with the maintenance and enhancement of the highest academic quality and standards
  • ensuring the operation of the University’s agreed quality assurance mechanisms, in such areas as programme approval, programme review, student evaluation of teaching, assessment and responses to external examiners/reviewer
  • developing SoNaM’s quality assurance systems with respect to teaching and learning for complementing University systems (QA_Net)
  • developing and facilitating engagement strategies aimed at improving access and widening participation in work based training opportunities, volunteer services and community-based projects
  • liaising with the students, communicating regularly to ensure partnership working on all aspects of the student experience.

 

Requirements

You should have:

  • a PhD with an appropriate professional qualifications in Nursing / Social Sciences
  • at least ten years’ of experience in education, research, clinical service, with relevant leadership experience
  • good academic standing and professional experience needed to work with both the key faculty committees and specific student constituencies
  • significant experience and knowledge of the curriculum and research initiatives, and clinical services at University level 
  • demonstrable achievements in scholarly and research outputs
  • strong writing and interpersonal skills, and ability to manage and communicate effectively
  • strong leadership and mentorship skills and competence in managing and developing talented staff
  • ability to demonstrate attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • understanding of the Pakistani culture, society and the education system 
  • ability to proactively prioritizing and effectively following through activities
  • understanding of academic standards, policies and culture within and outside Pakistan.
