Head of School, School of Biological Sciences

The Faculty of Science is one of Australia’s largest and most successful Science teaching and research communities.  Spanning a wide range of disciplines, we strive to achieve excellence in research and scholarship, and to make a significant contribution to intellectual, cultural, social and economic life at a local, national, and international level.  The Faculty is located across multiple locations, with the largest campuses being at St Lucia and Gatton.

The School of Biological Sciences is a high performing research intensive School that includes the traditional disciplines of Botany, Zoology and Entomology. The School teaches into the University’s Bachelor of Science program, and also administers the inter-Faculty Bachelor of Marine Studies program. The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with international research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences and biotechnology, plant and animal physiology, marine biology, insects and parasite interactions, and genetics & evolution.

The role

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a highly regarded School and continue to build on recent successes.  It requires a leader with a focus on research excellence who will also support innovation in teaching and learning and developing a first class student experience.  Also key will be a strong external orientation and the capacity to maintain and build upon the School’s strong reputation through engagement with a large and diverse group of external stakeholders.

The Head of School will provide strategic and operational academic leadership to the School in accordance with: https://ppl.app.uq.edu.au/content/1.20.04-roles-responsibilities-and-authority-heads-schools-and-major-centres.

A fundamental responsibility of the Head of School is to lead the development of high quality graduates and facilitate research outputs that have national and international impact within the School, and in the context of the Faculty and University.

 

The person

The University is seeking to appoint an inspiring and strategic leader with a strong academic background and the ability to unify diverse discipline groups around a coherent vision and strategy. The position calls for a team player and accomplished communicator, capable of embracing change and innovation. The successful candidate will need a global perspective with the ability to drive opportunities with local and offshore partners.

Applicants should have a demonstrated capacity to provide academic leadership, the ability to think and act strategically and possess strong communication, negotiation and liaison skills. You should also have extensive experience in University teaching and learning, preferably including teaching innovation and technology enhanced learning.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 5 years. A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
