At UNSW Arts & Social Sciences we explore big ideas, create new knowledge, and tackle critical social issues. Our Faculty is positioned as one of Australia's top three research Faculties in Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts and we are recognised for our interdisciplinary research with real social impact and community engagement. Within the Faculty, the School of Humanities and Languages was established on 1 July 2013, bringing together the former Schools of Humanities and International Studies. The School is one of Australia's leading centres of teaching and research excellence in the Humanities and Languages. Our academic staff are internationally recognised scholars and leaders in their fields. The School of Humanities and Languages has achieved excellent results in the last ERA round 2015 contributing to Literary Studies 5; Cultural Studies 5; Historical Studies 5 and Philosophy 4, and has achieved strong results in the recent QS rankings (2017) with History, Philosophy, Modern Languages and Linguistics all ranking in the top 51-100 universities worldwide. We also have an impressive cohort of Honours and Postgraduate Research students who add to the vibrant research culture.

The School of Humanities and Languages is currently seeking a new Head of School. The Head of School plays a key role in facilitating delivery of the UNSW 2025 Strategy’s strategic priorities of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact. The successful candidate should bring academic credibility in an appropriate discipline, combined with breadth of academic vision, strategic thinking, and demonstrable experience leading and inspiring teams in an innovative, research-intensive environment. They will be able to develop partnerships both within and external to the School, along with driving diversity and inclusion within the School.
