To advance science by pursuing effective high quality research within the specified research project.
The main duty of the post holder will be to undertake the mathematical modelling part of the research outlined in the JPI-AMR/MRC funded project DARWIN (Dynamics of Antimicrobial Resistance in the Urban Water Cycle in Europe).
In essence, developing mathematical models and Bayesian inference methods to select appropriate models and infer parameters describing the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance genes, plasmids, and their host bacteria in several compartments of three urban water cycles in the UK, Spain and Denmark.
Person Specification
Essential requirements:
- BSc (hons) or equivalent degree in a relevant mathematical, physical, engineering or biological subject
- PhD in mathematical, computer or statistical modelling applied to a relevant scientific area in the biological or environmental sciences, or near completion or equivalent proven knowledge, skills and experience
- Experience or training in development and analysis of mathematical models (deterministic or stochastic)
- Experience or training in Bayesian statistical approaches applied to relevant scientific data, including relevant computational methods, e.g. MCMC
- Programming skills in relevant languages, e.g. C/C++/Java, Matlab, R, Python
- Broad appreciation of wider science, including biology and chemistry
- Proven track record of research ambition as evidenced by timely publication of research, coupled with a commitment to the research in this project as part of on-going career development
- Ability to design, execute and write up work independently and to troubleshoot failed modelling approaches
- Evidence of the ability to prioritise and balance a range of activities
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members across a wide range of disciplines
- An understanding of the issues of confidentiality and to conduct themselves in a manner that protects any confidential information in their possession
Desired requirements:
- Excellent oral and written English language skills
- Research experience of modelling or data analysis in antimicrobial resistance
- Research experience in bioinformatics applied to genomics or metagenomics
- Research experience or knowledge in chemistry, analytical chemistry or water quality analysis
- Development or use of risk models to inform policy or practice
- Demonstrable success working with stakeholders on politically sensitive or emotive subjects
- Demonstrable success managing own contribution to complex research projects
