Ph.D - Early Stage Researcher Position Available at CTTC, Spain, Barcelona

Job Details

The Communication Technologies Division of the CTTC is searching for interested candidates in a Early Stage Research position in its Smart Energy Efficient Communication Technologies (SMARTECH) Department in the famework of the Marie-Curie ETN 5GSTEPFWD project. For more information about the Department please refer to http://technologies.cttc.es/smartech/.
The candidate must hold a Master degree in telecommunications, electrical, computer engineering or related disciplines, and should have experience in the area of wireless technologies and/or networks.
The successful candidate will conduct both academic and experimental system research in novel base station switching off schemes for mmWave-based HetNets with renewable energy capabilities. These new schemes will employ tools from machine learning to enable the deactivation of underutilized base stations, while minimizing the network’s outage probability. In addition, inspired by the concept of virtualization, we will introduce an innovative energy control scheme for the efficient management of the available energy in the network: A centralized orchestrator will be responsible for the energy transfer among the different base stations, to balance the power and guarantee the anticipated QoS. The orchestrator, having acquired the information about the base stations’ energy status through existing interfaces (e.g., S1&X2 in LTE), will be able to predict future energy states using predictive analytics and optimize energy-oriented utility functions for the whole network by using tools from optimization and cooperative game theory.

Marie Curie ITNs provide competitive financial support to the ESR including:· a competitive monthly living and mobility allowance (gross salary 32.000€-35.000€ per year),· coverage of the expenses related to the participation of the ESR in research and training activities (contribution to research-related costs, meetings, conference attendance, training actions, etc.). The recruited researchers will have a regular contract with the same rights and obligations as any other staff member of CTTC. The ESRs should start within 2 months of the acceptance of the fellowship.

The positions is fully funded for 3 years by the European Commission under the H2020 Marie Curie Innovative Training Network Programme. Candidates should be in their first four years of their research career (measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate), and not having awarded a doctoral degree. Candidates could be of any nationality but not having resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 1 year in the past 3 years. The recruited ESRs will be highly encouraged to enroll to the Ph.D. programme of local universities (UOC, UPC, UB, etc.).

Applicants should complete and upload the requested information via the on-line application form: http://5gstepfwd.eu/oaf-2017 , not later than 30 September 2017.

Additionally, applicants must email the application material (a cover letter indicating the applied position and justifying their suitability, a detailed CV and complete transcripts, the name and address of two referees to support their application, and any other relevant documents), to Dr. Christos Verikoukis (cveri@cttc.es), not later than 30 September 2017

MOBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Within the duration of the project, the ESRs will perform a secondment of up-to 6 months at OTE Academy, Athens, Greece.
