My project is titled “Oral histories of people with oral cancer in Pakistan” and will investigate the behavioural and social determinants of oral cancer in Rawalpindi, Pakistan through oral history interviews. South Asia is a home for many countries, which are regarded as countries with the highest incidence of oral cancer worldwide. Sri Lanka and Pakistan have recently topped the list. According to the latest cancer registry reports by Shaukat Khannum Memorial Hospital and Research Centre, oral cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in Pakistan after breast cancer as compared to UK where oral cancer is the 16th most common killer. Current research done on oral cancer globally is shaped by where the research is conducted. And certainly less by who is suffering. This also means that the research is largely informed by the perspectives of those from populations who have minimal experience of the condition. Indeed the treatments that have been developed have been developed in the West where the experience of oral cancer is not widespread. This research also tends to be dominated by a focus on habits and risk factors rather than the determinants, which increase the prevalence of the disease. Also, we can see that the majority of those who suffer from oral cancer belong to the East and South and their views and experiences of the disease differ from those living in the Western part of the world. However, their needs and views have not been the subject of sustained study. Therefore, my project will involve interviewing people with oral cancer through an ‘oral history’ approach, whereby, people with oral cancer in Pakistan will be given an opportunity to share their life stories and experiences of oral cancer. By exploring their life experiences we will be given an insight into the social determinants of oral cancer.
