Details

Tooth decay remains a significant public health problem; it is the most common oral disease effecting children in England with an average 12% of 3 and 25% of 5 year olds affected. Tooth decay affects children through pain, difficulty eating, sleeping and playing, with a greater burden falling on children from poor families. Poor oral health also has wider impacts on the family and school, contributing to school readiness and attendance. Tooth decay is the most common reason for hospital admissions in children 5-9 years of age, with over 30,000 children admitted in 2015-16. Tooth extractions under general anaesthetic in 2015 cost the NHS £50.5 million. There are stark inequalities in oral health, with children in deprived areas having poorer oral health than those living in less deprived areas. Indeed, 44% of the variation in tooth decay at local authority level may be explained by differences in deprivation.

This PhD project will develop an oral health data analytics platform which can be used to investigate trends in tooth decay over time at local authority level, differences in tooth decay and hospital admissions between children living in more and less deprived areas, as well as what influence differing types of local authority intervention activities (e.g. toothbrushing clubs, sugar smart cities) may have on child oral health and related outcomes.

The project will combine data on oral health from five Public Health England (PHE) Dental Public Health Epidemiology Programme surveys of 5-year-olds which span an 11 year timeframe (2007-2018). These data will be linked with other databases relevant to local authority spending, hospital admissions for dental extractions, and measures related to the social determinants of health.

Upon completion of the project, the oral health data platform will be a resource available for all commissioners, providers, academics and dental public health practitioners to examine future trends in oral health and inequalities, as well as testing of community and national level initiatives on local authority level oral health outcomes and inequalities.
