    The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide.     The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is embedded in the Faculty of Sciences. The school is located at the University's Waite campus, the pre-eminent agricultural and wine science research site in the Southern Hemisphere. The School offers academic programs in food and nutrition science, applied biology, agricultural science, viticulture and oenology and plant biotechnology. The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine has world-class expertise and facilities in human nutrition, agricultural and plant sciences, plant breeding, viticulture and oenology and biochemistry. The School is home to a range of research centres and works closely with a number of co-located partners including CSIRO (Agriculture, Land & Food), South Australian Research & Development Institute and Australian Wine Research Institute, as well as the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute.

    The ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production will progress a series of projects that span the grape and wine production chain. The overarching aim is to provide new knowledge and methods that can be incorporated into grape and wine production strategies so that the industry can profitability and sustainably produce distinct wines sought by the market, despite the challenges of climate extremes, water restrictions, changing consumer preferences and international competition.

    The successful candidate will conduct research as part of the ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production. The candidate will participate in a research project on characterising the distinctive flavours of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon wines, which will involve investigation of viticultural management techniques, targeted and untargeted metabolomics workflows for analyses of volatile and non-volatile compounds, and sensory science techniques for wine assessments. The role will also comprise project management, field work and travel, collaboration with stakeholders in the Coonawarra wine region and at CSIRO, supervision of research students and/or technical staff, workshop participation, and preparation of reports and publications.

    Salary: (Level A) $65,894 to $89,425 per annum

    Superannuation: An employer contribution of up to 17% may apply.

    Term of position: This full-time, fixed-term position is available from 29 January 2018 for 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility of a further 3 year extension, subject to the progress of the project.

     

    To be successful you should have:

    • PhD in chemistry, viticulture and oenology, food chemistry, or other relevant discipline

    • Highly developed skills in targeted and/or untargeted methods of chemical analysis by HPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS, and chemometrics

    • Demonstrated ability to manage a research project and work effectively with multi-disciplinary research teams

    • Excellent skills in written and oral communication to a range of audiences, and peer-reviewed publications

    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and complete reports and manuscripts in a timely manner

    • Evidence of supervisory skills with a preference for those with experience supervising Honours, Masters and/or PhD students

    • Willingness and ability to work across several participant organisations (including regional and interstate), potentially requiring periods of travel during vintage periods and others times of the year

    • Current driver’s licence

     

    Preference will be given to candidates that also have experience in:

    • Sensory analysis of foods or beverages (highly desirable)

    • Troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instruments

    • Viticultural and winemaking practices

    • Successful collaboration with industry personnel

    • Postdoctoral research with an ability to manage a project budget
