Research Associate in Modelling Benthic Biogeochemical Dynamics in Arctic Sediments from the Local to the Regional Scale

The Bristol Isotope Group in the School of Earth Sciences (in close collaboration with the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and the University of Leeds) is inviting applications for a Research Assistant to work on the NERC funded ChAOS (The Changing Arctic Ocean Seafloor; ‪@Arctic_Seafloor) project. ChAOS is part of the larger “Changing Arctic Ocean Program” investigating the effect of changing sea ice cover on the benthic Arctic ecosystems and its implications for benthic-pelagic coupling. The position will focus on the modelling aspects of the project, but also provides opportunities to join up to 2 research cruises to the Barents Sea in summers 2018 and 2019 on board the RRS James Clark Ross. In addition, it will include regular research visits/stays in Bruxelles and Leeds, as well as provide ample networking opportunities within the (inter)national network of project partners. The position will start early 2018, and funding is available for 36 months.

The Research Associate will develop and apply state-of-the-art diagenetic models on both the local and regional scale to 1) identify the main controls on benthic-pelagic coupling, 2) quantify benthic-pelagic exchange fluxes, and 3) evaluate their response to projected climate change. Model development and application will be informed by the multi-disciplinary data set collected within the ChAOS project and the Research Associate thus plays a crucial role in interdisciplinary knowledge synthesis. She/he will be required to liaise with all project partners, coordinate synergies with modelling partners across the program and will be encourage to join one of the program’s research cruise. In addition, the Research Associate will undertake regular research visits to project partners at Leeds and Bruxelles, and will have opportunities to present the research at international conferences and mentor postgraduate researchers.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in geoscience, oceanography, marine sciences (or related fields), will have strong numerical skills and extensive experience in numerical modelling, and will be author of publications in top-ranked international journals. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate excellent communication skills, experience in working as part of a research project, and proven ability to work independently with the ability to take initiative, develop research methodologies and methods of data analysis.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Katharine Hendry (K.Hendry@bristol.ac.uk); Dr Sandra Arndt (Sandra.Arndt@ulb.ac.be); Dr Christian Maerz (c.maerz@leeds.ac.uk

Please note that interviews for this position will take place in January 2018.
