The Faculty of Medicine is a leading provider of medical education and medical research in Queensland, with the country's largest medical program. The Faculty is a diverse enterprise operating over multiple sites, with Queensland Health and private health service providers as major partners. Geographically, the School extends throughout Queensland with major sites in Brisbane, the outer metropolitan areas, and a number of rural and remote area facilities throughout the rest of the state including the UQ Ipswich campus. The Centre for Online Health
This PhD or MPhil will be hosted by the Centre for Online Health (COH), which is located at the Princess Alexandra Hospital campus.
Since 1999, the COH has been recognised internationally for its role in research, service delivery and education and training in the fields of telemedicine, telehealth and e-Healthcare. The COH's multidisciplinary team of clinicians, academic researchers, educators, technicians, engineers and administrators brings together a broad mix of skills. The key areas of activity of the COH are:
- Clinically focussed research with an emphasis on examining the feasibility, efficacy, clinical effectiveness and economics of telehealth and telemedicine in a variety of settings.
- Academic and vocational education and training in e-Healthcare and clinical telehealth.
- As a service provider of clinical telemedicine services.
These three synergistic activities provide a unique environment in which telemedicine within the modern health service may be explored and understood.
Together with three other UQ research centres (the Centre for Research in Geriatric Medicine, Dermatology Research Centre and the Telerehabilitation Research Unit), COH was awarded a NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Telehealth in 2013. The current position will join a substantial team of researchers and students associated with the CRE. The CRE offers an extensive program to support personal development of research students and junior post-doctoral researchers.

Expressions of interest are invited from outstanding graduates in health-related fields who have relevant experience and are highly motivated to join the dynamic research group at COH and undertake a full-time PhD project to advance our understandings of how to improve care to Indigenous Australians living in remote communities using telehealth.
This position is based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Woolloongabba QLD.
Investigators from the COH have secured funding from the Department of Health to implement a telehealth-facilitated model of dementia care to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from remote communities within Indigenous specific health services. The project aims to address consumer choice and reduce barriers to access to specialist services. It will involve the implementation of specialist dementia care services into six community-controlled Aboriginal Medical Services or Indigenous specific residential aged care facilities across Queensland
The service will be a holistic model that includes partnership and engagement, telehealth equipment installation, training of Indigenous health workers, developing clinical pathways, health promotion for dementia prevention and the delivery of clinical telehealth services. A multi-disciplinary assessment of the service will identify perceived clinical effectiveness, consumer perspectives, economic and organisational aspects. A transferability assessment will determine scalability and generalizability of the service to other sites throughout Australia.
As part of the formal application process to UQ, the student will work with the relevant supervisors to articulate a research question within the scope of this larger project.
Applicants must comply with the entry requirements for PhD or MPhil admission at The University of Queensland, including English language proficiency, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Demonstration of research ability through publication output in peer-reviewed international journals is also desirable.
Specific selection criteria
Applicants must be willing to apply for a scholarship package (assistance will be given with this).
- Demonstrated knowledge in some or all of the following areas:
- Telehealth and/or e-health
- Indigenous health
- Geriatrics or dementia care
- Applicants MUST be Australian or New Zealand citizens.
- Applicants must be able to enrol full-time in the PhD program (to commence beginning of 2018).
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Evidence of contribution to research, such as publication of papers or other academic output.
- Ability to work independently, self-reliance and motivation.
- Initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and an ability to think laterally.
- Demonstrated organisational ability and good record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
The PhD scholarship includes a living allowance of $27,082 per annum (2018 rate), indexed annually. The scholarship will be awarded on a full time basis for 3 years. The MPhil scholarship is at the same rate for up to 2 years only.
