PhD Studentship: Modelling and optimisation of manufacturing products and processes - EPRSC Manufac

Job Details

Details

A studentship is available in Modelling and Optimisation to start in September 2018. This is linked to EPSRC supported grants in Manufacturing using Powder Processes and Advanced Metrology.

The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) funded eight flagship Future Manufacturing Hubs, two of which are focused on Powder Manufacturing and Manufacturing Metrology. The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering is part of both of these hubs and will support research through smart digital manufacturing methodologies in collaboration with the Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) who host the Factory of the Future. The technologies and methods will become part of the critical infrastructure for a new generation of digital, high value manufacturing, the so called 4th industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0.

The aim of this PhD is to develop fundamental methods that integrate measurement and data with design and production processes to improve control, quality and productivity for future manufacturing. The research is on modelling and optimisation of manufacturing products and processes using large volume metrological data. Models will need to be developed and integrated with metrology data to characterise products and processes at spatial and temporal scales.

Prospective candidates should have a good honours degree (Class 1 or 2:1) in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other related disciplines. Candidates with a background in one or more the following topics are particularly encouraged to apply: System identification, signal processing, machine learning, control and optimisation, manufacturing.

Funding Notes

The Studentship is fully funded for 3 years, which includes Home/EU fees as well as a tax-free stipend at the EPSRC rate (£14,553 stipend for 2017/8 (2018/9 details awaited).

Full funding is only available to UK and EU nationals; non-UK/EU nationals can apply but would only receive a partial contribution towards the tuition fees.
