    The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide.     The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is embedded in the Faculty of Sciences. The school is located at the University's Waite campus, the pre-eminent agricultural and wine science research site in the Southern Hemisphere. The School offers academic programs in food and nutrition science, applied biology, agricultural science, viticulture and oenology and plant biotechnology. The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine has world-class expertise and facilities in human nutrition, agricultural and plant sciences, plant breeding, viticulture and oenology and biochemistry. The School is home to a range of research centres and works closely with a number of co-located partners including CSIRO (Agriculture, Land & Food), South Australian Research & Development Institute and Australian Wine Research Institute, as well as the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute.

    The ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production will progress a series of projects that span the grape and wine production chain. The overarching aim is to provide new knowledge and methods that can be incorporated into grape and wine production strategies so that the industry can profitability and sustainably produce distinct wines sought by the market, despite the challenges of climate extremes, water restrictions, changing consumer preferences and international competition.

    The successful candidate will conduct research as part of the ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production.  The candidate will participate in research to enhance yeast and/or bacterial strains used for winemaking via a range of methods including Directed Evolution and recombinant approaches. In addition, the study will examine the diversity of yeast found in association with vines and grapes and particularly the influence of grape variety on the isolates recovered. A metagenomic approach will be used to survey the field samples, whilst cultured isolates from both aspects of the project with be characterised via high throughput micro-fermentation and pilot–scale fermentation screens. Subsequent wine analysis will include full chemical and sensory profiling.

     

    Salary:

    (Level A) $65,894 to $89,425 per annum (pro rata for part time)

     

    Superannuation:

    An employer contribution of up to 17% may apply.

     

    Term of position:

    This full-time, fixed-term position is available from 29 Jan 2018 for 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility of a further 3 years, subject to the progress of the project. Consideration will be given for a part time (0.5 FTE to 0.8 FTE) position for an exceptional candidate(s) meeting all of the selection criteria.

     

    Eligibility Criteria: 

    To be successful you should have:

    • PhD in microbiology, oenology, molecular biology or other relevant discipline (if thesis submission is pending, state expected submission date)
    • Highly developed skills in microbial isolation and/or culture, biochemical and genetic techniques and chemical analysis.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in research teams
    • Excellent skills in written and oral communication to a range of audiences, including evidence of scientific writing ability
    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and complete reports and manuscripts in a timely manner
    • Evidence of supervisory skills with a preference for those with experience supervising Honours, Masters and/or PhD students
    • Willingness and ability to work across several participant organisations (including regional and interstate), potentially requiring relocation for periods of several weeks at a time.
    • Current drivers licence

     

    Preference will be given to candidates that also have experience in: 

    • Experience in wine yeast biology including field recover, identification and characterisation under model wine conditions
    • Experience with benchtop fermenters, robotic liquid handling systems, sequencing and bioinformatics.
    • Research publications in peer reviewed journals
    • Evidence of successful collaboration with industry personnel
    • Prior postdoctoral experience and an ability to manage a research budget
