Junior Analyst: GCMS Laboratory

The aim of the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) is to ensure optimal utilisation of expensive multi-user research equipment in the service of the research community of Stellenbosch University, and the South African research and development sector in general. The MS Unit performs mass spectrometric analysis for internal and external clients. Mass spectrometry is an analytical chemistry technique that is used to detect and/or quantify organic chemical compounds. It is an important tool for research and service in the Science, Agriculture, Engineering and Medical Faculties. The purpose of the Unit is to provide state-of-the-art equipment and the necessary expertise to enable researchers to excel in their research. In addition, the Unit provides a service to external university and industry clients to enable it to be cost effective.
Duties:
- Responsible for GCMS and GCFID analysis, including setting up the instrument, as well as basic data interpretation and quantification;
- Preparing samples;
- Preparing analytical reports for clients to include calibration curves, as well as results tables for the requested analyses;
- Receiving and logging samples and ordering chemicals and consumables;
- General administration of the GCMS lab, including the logbook;
- Waste management;
- Corresponding with clients, answering telephones and emails;
- Performing general tasks to support the Senior Analysts in the functions of the laboratory.
Job Requirements:
- B.Sc. Hons/ MSc with Chemistry and /or Biochemistry, or Food Science. or Biotechnology;
- Experience with GCMS and/or GCFID analysis;
- Good communication skills.
Recommendation:
- Experience with GCMS and GCFID on Agilent and Thermo equipment;
- Experience in a GLP or SANAS 17025 accredited laboratory;
- Experience with client service.
