Job Details

As Carleton University celebrates its 75th anniversary, Canada’s Capital University is thriving. As we look toward the next 75 years and beyond, our search for a new President and Vice-Chancellor reflects a collective ambition to continue to enhance and expand Carleton’s commitment to excellence in research, teaching and community service.

Located in Ottawa, Carleton’s close connections to: government institutions, the diplomatic community, non-governmental organizations, and to the National Capital Region’s thriving knowledge economy, make our university a remarkable place to learn and live. That’s our capital advantage; a distinguishing feature that makes Carleton stand out in Canada’s post-secondary landscape and facilitates co-op opportunities for students and research collaborations for faculty, among many other benefits.

We are a dynamic, comprehensive, research and teaching institution with a tradition of leading change. Our internationally recognized faculty, staff and researchers provide more than 30,000 full and part-time students from every province and more than 100 countries around the world with academic opportunities in more than 65 programs of study. Carleton has a $3.7 billion economic impact, 25 Canada Research Chairs, 28 Royal Society Fellows, 18 recipients of the Order of Canada, and nine 3M National Teaching Award winners. Carleton’s creative, interdisciplinary and international approach to research has led to many significant discoveries and creative works with impacts felt across Ottawa, Canada and the world. Our focus on experiential learning and employability equips students with the skills and experience they need to tackle challenges at home and abroad. Our distinguished alumni are leaders in many sectors across Canada and internationally, they include: diplomats, prominent business leaders, award-winning authors, designers, political leaders, top bureaucrats and high-profile journalists. As an innovative institution, Carleton is uniquely committed to developing solutions to real-world problems by pushing the boundaries of knowledge and understanding.

The Board of Governors has initiated a global search to identify Carleton’s next President and Vice-Chancellor. We welcome candidates who have experience leading and managing with inspiration and integrity in a complex organization. They will possess a deep knowledge of the global post-secondary education sector and will be capable of working with colleagues to identify opportunities for Carleton in this evolving landscape. Crucially, they will be a collegial leader with strong relationship building skills and have the capacity to develop an innovative and compelling overarching vision for the university. The successful candidate will lead a university that has carefully managed its revenue and expenditure budgets and is in a strong financial position.

The new leader will also be called upon to work on a number of emerging board priorities over time, including: improving the learning experiences of students to better prepare them for employment, encouraging the continued development of academic experimentation, maximizing the university’s research impact, improving the university’s engagement with the local, Indigenous, national and international communities that we serve, collaborating with the province to make the cost of a university education more accessible, ensuring that Board of Governors and university activities are open and transparent, ensuring we maintain a strong financial position, developing an effective strategic communications plan, and improving the national and international reputation of the university.

Carleton University is strongly committed to fostering diversity within its community as a source of excellence, cultural enrichment and social strength. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our university including, but not limited to, women; visible minorities; First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples; persons with disabilities; and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expressions. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

Carleton is partnering with the executive search firm Perrett Laver and the Presidential Search Committee will begin its consideration of individuals immediately.

The closing date for applications is midday (EST) on Monday, December 18th.
