Queensland Brain Institute

Established in 2003, QBI (www.qbi.uq.edu.au) is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ. It is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders, working across a range of disciplines, focused on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease. This includes sensory neurobiology both in lab. and field.

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world’s leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in both the 2010, 2012, and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The Sensory Neurobiology Group within QBI addresses fundamental questions about how animals such as reef fish, stomatopod crustaceans and the cephalopods like octopus, perceive, communicate, and behave in their marine environment. One focus is colours and colour communication, including camouflage, another the new language of polarised light. CoralWatch, the lab’s citizen science group is translating science for education and the public with the aim of saving The Great Barrier Reef.

The role

The successful appointee will have a primary focus to provide research support to the Sensory Neurobiology Group by efficiently managing the laboratory and providing admin support to the Group Leader. The successful candidate will also assist in fieldwork to study how animals perceive and use colour, patterns, and other properties of light and the information that they convey.  The appointee will oversee and organise frequent field trips and expeditions, and assist in compiling draft documents which include grant submissions, pulications and reports. 

 

The person

Applicants should possess tertiary qualifications in whole animal biology, with subsequent relevant experience and knowledge of related research techniques in neurobiology, and/or marine science and conservation, coupled with substantial experience working in laboratory and (sometimes remote) field environments .

You should also have an understanding of tertiary research frameworks, good writing abilities, excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a small cohesive and dynamic research team.  A scientific diving certification (or willingness to acquire a scientific diving certification) will be highly regarded and a Queensland boat-drivers licence or equivalent essential.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

 

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at HEW Level 6 or 7. The remuneration package will be in the range $74,207 - $89,559 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $86,822 - $104,784 p.a. FTE).
