Job Purpose

Lecturer contributing to the whole range of research, teaching and administration.

Research will involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original work, often in collaboration with others in academia and/or industry. The research will have measurable outcomes and the post-holder will generate a growing national and international reputation.

The post holder will have outstanding skills in the use of advanced experimental methods, analysis of experiments and computational approaches to simulation of the flow of complex materials. The interaction between computational approaches to prediction of flow behaviour and experimental measurements is a fertile area of research and it is desirable for the post-holder to have familiarity with some of the major computational methods and willingness to develop understanding of others. Skills in Discrete Element Methods and data handling with respect to statistical and uncertainty modelling would be a particular advantage, and would enhance the School’s undergraduate teaching in this area (see below) as well as research.

The post holder will be expected to reinforce the relationship with the Positron Imaging Centre (PIC), developing a programme of personal research in collaboration with the Centre and interacting as appropriate with other users, both academic and industrial.

The post-holder will be expected to teach as needed on the Chemical Engineering programmes. It would be desirable for him/her to be able to teach analytical and computational techniques at all levels, from beginner to Masters equivalent.

Teaching will include a substantial contribution to: (a) the delivery of teaching and assessment in Chemical Engineering at all levels; (b) the development of new modules (including programme/module review) and; and (c) enhancement of the student experience and employability, often through the personal tutorial route. The role will also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, and (b) supervising and examining PhD students.

Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at School level or further within the University.

The successful candidate will work alongside Professor Jonathan Seville and Dr Andy Ingram in the School of Chemical Engineering, and strong interaction is expected with other academic staff in the School, particularly Professor Barigou and his team, and with other Schools at Birmingham. In the PIC, the main interaction will be with Professor David Parker, the Director of the Centre.
