Job Purpose

The Department of Theology and Religion is seeking to appoint a teaching fellow to teach and advise undergraduate, postgraduate students within the field of contemporary Islamic Studies, specifically on courses contributing to the Department of Theology and Religion degree programmes. The post-holder will be managed and supervised by the Head of Department.

The candidate will: teach seminars and present lectures associated with the two modules; mark work associated with those modules; moderate or second mark work on modules in cognate areas; answer student queries relating to those modules; engage in administrative tasks appropriate to delivering the modules; engage in other teaching-related tasks where required. There will also be a moderate amount of administration, at a level commensurate for a post at this level, as determined by the Head of Department. You will be expected to undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on your teaching, using student and peer review feedback, in order to enhance your teaching and learning processes.

 

Summary of Role:

  • Teaching on the courses: Islamic Feminism; Contemporary Approaches to the study of Islam; and Islam in the West. These contribute to established postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programme of the Department of Theology and Religion (under the supervision of the Head of Department)
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the student experience or employability through acting as a personal tutee to undergraduate students and participating in the life of the department.

 

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Teach courses at a range of levels within contemporary Islamic Studies to undergraduates, postgraduates, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, so that the School’s teaching objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues.
  • Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
  • Develop an approach to planning and reviewing own teaching.
  • Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining.
  • Frequently update own subject expertise.
  • Undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer on own specialism that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.
  • Undertake management/administration arising from teaching.
  • Contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
  • Contribute to public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University.

 

Person Specification

The candidate must have:

  • Either a PhD in Islamic Studies (or similar cognate area) or have submitted their thesis by the date that the position begins.
  • Experience teaching in Islamic or Religious Studies (or cognate areas) and must have contemporary Islam as an area of teaching competence.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
