The School of Biological Sciences

The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest and most successful of its type in Australia, with broad expertise across ecology and evolution, molecular and quantitative genetics, paleobiology, developmental biology, behaviour, plant and animal physiology, and conservation biology.  Our research programs involve a diverse array of taxa, ranging across microbes, animals and plants, including a particular focus in the areas of marine biology and entomology. Unique opportunities for biological research are provided by our proximity to a stunning array of marine and terrestrial subtropical habitats and their endemic biodiversity.   A number of research programs in the School take advantage of major model-organism systems, including Drosophila, C. elegans, and Arabidopsis, and many include a strong quantitative and modelling focus.

We are seeking a highly experienced and qualified statistician who will provide services to our staff and students, as well as contributing to our teaching and research programs.

 

The role

The appointee will provide statistical advisory services to researchers and postgraduate students, including consulting sessions and provision of statistical skills workshops.  The successful applicant will also conduct original, externally funded research in an area relevant to the School’s disciplines and will also participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision, as well as performing administrative and other activities associated with the School. 

 

The person

Applicants must possess a PhD in a relevant field of biological sciences and hold Accredited Statistician status with the Statistical Society of Australia.   The successful applicant will have demonstrated expert knowledge in the field of in the areas of statistics and methods relevant to current research interests of Biological Sciences research staff, particularly the development of statistical methods in ecology, evolutionary biology, and general whole-organism biology.  Highly advanced skills in the R statistical computing environment are required.  Evidence of publication in high-ranking refereed journals and success in attracting external research funding is essential. Demonstrated teaching and supervision skills and experience at all student levels is essential.

 

Remuneration

This is a full-time, continuing appointment at Academic level C.  The remuneration package will be in the range $112,874 - $130,150 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $132,063 - $152,276 p.a.).
