Job Purpose

The purpose of the job is to deliver projects related to the integration of thermal (heat and cold) energy storage and liquid air energy storage with energy networks. The focus will be on medium to large scale energy storage systems for distributed and centralised energy networks. The work will involve the following –

  • Model development for thermal energy storage system, with a focus on medium and large scale systems for distributed and centralised energy networks; investigation into the effects of properties of thermal energy storage materials and storage device configurations on the performance of the energy storage system;
  • Model development for liquid air energy storage, with a focus on medium and large scale systems for distributed and centralised energy networks; investigation into the properties of thermal energy storage materials and heat transfer fluids, and configuration thermal energy storage units on the performance of liquid air energy storage system;
  • Development of a method for the integration of thermal energy storage with energy networks with the integration also considering transportation (rail, sea and land) and utilisation of curtailed renewable energy applications;
  • Development of a method for the integration of liquid air energy storage technology with energy networks with the medium scale liquid air energy storage also considering combined heating, cooling and power applications;
  • Interactions with both academic and industrial collaborators in the project teams, and building internal & external contacts and networks;
  • Helping with training PhD students and other group members who are working on similar areas;
  • Writing journal and conference publications;
  • Organising review meetings and seminars;
  • Supervising student’s projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Assisting supervisors to train researchers and students new to the laboratories and to ensure the laboratories to meet health and safety requirements

Person Specification

First or a 2:1 degree in relevant science/engineering discipline and PhD or equivalent experience and qualifications in an area related to the main research responsibilities;

  • Solid background in heat and mass transfer, and fluid flow, and engineering thermodynamics;
  • Strong capability in process and system level modelling;
  • Strong experience in CFD modelling;
  • Demonstrable prior experience and track record in areas closely related to the main research responsibilities;
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
