The Centre for Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (APQ) sees itself as central to the promotion of a mature quality culture at Stellenbosch University (SU), with its staff forming part of networked improvement communities, playing a central role in the sense-making, improvement, innovation and transformation of SU's functions in terms of Academic Planning, Quality Assurance, and Environmental Scanning. The Centre manages these three functions as part of the Learning and Teaching Enhancement (LTE) Division across the different faculties and systems at SU and within the expanding Higher Education (HE) policy landscape, doing trend analyses and sharing good practices across different epistemological frameworks (ways of knowing), with special attention to enhancing the student voice and increasing student participation in APQ-related activities.

 

Duties: 

  • Advising faculties on matters relating to policy, procedures and regulations for new programmes and changes to existing programmes;
  • Rendering a secretariat service to the Programme Advisory Committee (PAC);
  • Liaising and building relationships with internal stakeholders (e.g. Centre for Teaching and Learning, Division for Social Impact, the Registrar¿s Division, Vice Deans (Teaching) and Faculty Programme Committees) and external stakeholders (e.g. the Department of Higher Education and Training, Council on Higher Education and the South African Qualifications Authority) with regard to the introduction of new academic programmes and qualifications, as well as changes to them;
  • Managing the approval processes for and record-keeping of all applications and correspondence regarding SU's approved Programme Qualification Mix;
  • Environmental scanning of the Higher Education policy landscape;
  • Participating in programme evaluation and renewal actions, both in terms of the formal curriculum and in the development of co-curricular programmes at SU.

 

Job Requirements:

 

  • Baccalaureus degree;
  • Knowledge of the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) and the ability to advice faculties in a nuanced manner on matters relating to policy and procedures and regulations for new programmes and changes to existing programmes;
  • At least five years' appropriate experience in the higher education sector relating to policy and procedures and regulations for new programmes and changes to existing programmes;
  • Proven skills in the writing of high-level reports and minutes;
  • Highly articulated with advanced writing abilities;
  • Excellent interpersonal relations and the ability to communicate with ease on all levels;
  • High-level organisational and time management and planning skills;
  • Precise attention to the finest detail;
  • Computer literate (word processing and text writing and editing and proficiency regarding SharePoint).

 

As part of the interview process short listed candidates could be expected to perform a task based assessment test based on the requirements as set out in the advertisement.

 

Recommendation:

 

  • A postgraduate qualification;
  • Knowledge and experience of SU's academic planning environment;
  • Experience in the design of academic programmes and the formulation of module outcomes;
  • Exposure to the Higher Education policy environment.
