UQ Business School

The UQ Business School is primarily located on the St Lucia campus with a staff of approximately 170 academic staff, 150 tutors and 85 professional staff.  The School also leases space in the Brisbane central business district at 293 Queen Street, where it offers core MBA courses and provides executive education and function facilities.

The School has seven main areas of academic strength represented by disciplines– accounting and accountability; business information systems; finance; management; marketing; strategy and international business; and tourism – with an associate professor reporting to the Head of School leading each discipline. Currently, the School has over 8,000 students enrolled in its programs: 6,200 at undergraduate level, 2,000 at postgraduate coursework level, and around 160 in research higher degree programs. Approximately one-third of the student body are international students, mostly from the Asia-Pacific region.

The Role

As the face of the UQ Business School, you will be a main point of contact for our students. Through your interactions with students, you will play a significant part in their overall student experience whilst at the University of Queensland. As the casual tutors play such an important part in the success of the UQ Business School, we invest in the development of our casual tutors through regular training sessions and mentoring with Course Coordinators and other Academic staff within the School.

In this role, casual tutorial staff are expected to participate in the education of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students within the UQ Business School by:

• preparing and delivering tutorials as instructed by the Course Coordinator, Associate Lecturer or Lecturer
• marking assessment items arising directly from the conduct of the tutorial (e.g. tutorial quizzes, oral presentations)
• conducting regular (usually weekly) student consultations at specified times to answer individuals and group student queries on course content
• maintaining tutorial participation and attendance lists as requested
• monitoring and responsing promptly to emails from academic and administration staff within one business day
• attending course-specific tutor meetings as requested
• organisign and undergoing SETutor Evaluations and maintaining a satisfactory teaching evaluation score
• attending other training as directed by the supervisor
• completing the UQ Annual Fire Safety and General Workplace Safety induction online training modules
• completing the UQ Academic Integrity Tutorial online training module.
• The following duties are also required but are remunerated separately from the above duties:
• attending the Tutor Development Day at the commencing semester for the year
• attending and assisting with exam viewing sessions as requested
• marking assignments and exams under the supervision of the Course Coordinator in accordance with University policies.

The Person

Casual tutorial staff are expected to meet the following requirements: 

1. minimum qualification of an undergraduate degree, ideally in a business related area
2. minimum GPA of 4.0/pass or enrolment in a relevant postgraduate program (coursework or HDR)
3. no finding of ‘guilty’ in student misconduct matters
4. demonstrated effective teaching skills or potential to rapidly acquire this skill, including the ability to encourage student input, be approachable and provide clear helpful advice and feedback
5. proficiency in the use of e-learning systems (e.g. Blackboard) or ability to rapidly acquire this skill
6. comfort and confidence with public speaking
7. ability to effectively lead small groups
8. high level of interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills including the ability to provide advice to and liaise with a wide range of individuals including senior academics, students, and professional staff
9. demonstrated ability to exercise tact, good judgement and maintain confidentiality
10. ability to prioritise own workload, work independently and meet deadlines
11. willingness to undertake a Student Evaluation of Tutor (SETutor) questionnaire; and, if a Higher Degree Research (PhD) student, willingness to participate in the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) program.

Remuneration

Casual tutors are employed on a casual basis and the salary rates and conditions are paid in accordance with the University of Queensland Enterprise Agreement 2014-2017.
