Job Purpose

The postholder will create and disseminate knowledge through initiating and conducting original research; through publication; and through developing and delivering postgraduate and CPD programmes, and contributing to undergraduate teaching, for students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. In addition, they will contribute both to the School and the Institute in terms of taking on appropriate leadership or administrative roles, and will potentially be involved in collaborative projects with external NHS, local authority and voluntary sector organisations around knowledge transfer and impact.

The postholder will take on principal investigator and co-investigator roles in relation to developing original research proposals, and bidding for and delivering research grants, in collaboration with colleagues in the Institute for Mental Health and as part of wider collaborations. They will publish in leading Journals and lead or collaborate in knowledge transfer and impact activity.

Teaching is likely to include co-leading the development and delivery of interdisciplinary postgraduate mental health programmes, and contributing to teaching across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the School of Social Policy and the Institute for Mental Health, including professional doctorates and CPD programmes. The role will also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.

Management and administration is likely to involve contributions both within the School and the Institute, and/or substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, public engagement, or similar activities outside the University.

 

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications
  • Substantial research/teaching experience and scholarship within mental health, public health and/or social care
  • Substantial knowledge and/or experience of the health and social care sector, and an ability to make connection with policy makers, managers, practitioners, service users and carers.
  • An interest in innovative approaches and service models within the field of mental health, including youth mental health
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning/ research, including working co-productively with service users and staff working in mental health, public health and/or social care services
  • Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels
