Director of Communications and Marketing

Attractive Package

This is a rare opportunity to lead a crucial function at one of the UK’s largest and most popular universities through exciting, transformational times.  The University has a distinguished heritage and an ambitious agenda for the future, ‘Manchester 2020’, which aims to make Manchester one of the world’s leading universities by 2020.  With responsibility for an award-winning directorate, and as part of the Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer’s Leadership Team, this appointment will play a key role in achieving the University’s strategic priorities and continued success.

We are looking for a talented executive-level communications and marketing professional who’ll report to the Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, and who will be responsible for leading a central team of 30 and a wider, pan-university team of more than 100, and directing all aspects of the University’s communications and marketing activities.

The Role

You will organise and direct the University MarCom’s function, leading an effective and proactive service which provides sector-leading communications and marketing and encourages an ethos of professional excellence across the whole University. Under your inspiring leadership, you will be responsible for the overall strategic direction and delivery of all the University’s communications and marketing activities, including chairing the University’s Communication and Marketing Leadership Team.  In so doing, you will enhance and consolidate the University’s profile with key audiences, including domestic and international prospective students, staff, employers and institutional partners.  You’ll be expected to provide evidence-based advice on the reputational implications of internal and external developments, and liaise closely with a range of key senior colleagues in Professional Support Services and academic faculties to ensure optimal performance of the University’s communications, brand and reputation.

The Person

A qualified communications or marketing professional, you’ll have significant experience of senior MarComs management and leadership in an organisation of comparable scale and complexity, and the ability to work at the highest strategic level. Your track record will demonstrate great success in leading, motivating and inspiring a large and diverse professional MarComs team to deliver a world class service in a highly competitive market.  You are someone who relishes the opportunity to work collaboratively and innovatively, effectively influencing and building relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders in order to win support and achieve your objectives. You’ll also have the gravitas and credibility to be able to both challenge and advise senior colleagues, and the board, whilst remaining sensitive to the cultural, political and operational issues that exist within a large, complex, research-intensive academic institution.

Your track record will demonstrate that you can lead your team to deliver services that are exceptionally professional, effective, efficient and agile.  You will also be able to demonstrate a capacity to keep ahead of, and respond to, a rapidly changing sector.  You may not have prior experience of working in the higher education sector, but you will have a passion for what we do and the drive to deliver the Manchester 2020 Strategy, particularly ‘A Reputation for Excellence’.
