Job Details

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2018/19 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

Doctor Adriana Bunea (Politics & International Relations, Lead Supervisor) (A.Bunea@soton.ac.uk), Professor Will Jennings (Politics & International Relations), Doctor Raimondas Ibenskas (Politics & International Relations)

The project investigates empirically the strategies employed by British interest groups to lobbying national and supranational decision-makers during the Brexit negotiations. Theoretically, the project draws on theories of lobbying in multi-level governance and examines empirically the effects of a rollback in policy competences from the supranational to the national level on interest groups’ lobbying strategies employed to influence decision-makers and shape negotiation outcomes. Empirically, the project adopts a quantitative research design that employs an original online survey of British interest groups and the automated text analysis of interest groups’ policy position documents, activity reports and media reports.

Skills Required

  • An undergraduate degree in political science, economics, public policy or public administration.
  • Training in quantitative methods at undergraduate level.
  • Data collection and data management experience.
  • Good knowledge of EU politics and policymaking.
